About the Role
Touchstone is looking for an enthusiastic and friendly new team member to join our routesetting team as an apprentice at MetalMark. The apprentice program is intended to bring inexperienced routesetters up to speed on all the skills and techniques required for routesetting. Through this program, we hope to encourage dedicated climbers to pursue routesetting. This position is part-time, working less than 30 hours per week.
Apprentice duties include but are not limited to:
- Removal, washing, and sorting of climbing holds
- Setting, forerunning, and accurate grading of new routes and boulder problems
- Maintenance, organization, and care of routesetting tools and supplies
- Integrating routesetting and customer service
- The proper use of setting tools and PPE
- Ensuring that climbing and gym safety standards are being met
- Helping maintain a clean gym
Job Requirements:
- At least one year of climbing experience, with some experience lead climbing and belaying.
- Passion for climbing, fitness, wellness, creative arts, or all of the above!
- Ability to work both cooperatively within a team and independently over the course of a work day
- Highly self-directed and motivated; if you see a task that needs to be done, you do it
- Comfortable working with light power tools and not intimidated by working at heights of up to 45 feet
- Weekday availability for two 8 hour shifts per week
- This is a three month apprenticeship, with the potential to extend an additional three months
Some Travel Required:
Bay Area routesetter apprentices may be scheduled to work at various gyms on the San Francisco Peninsula and greater Bay Area.
Compensation and How to Apply:
Starting Pay is $19.00/hour. Routesetter Apprentice individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to; facility location and type, membership volume, experience, and job/position tenure.
