What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Health Intern position at Town of Addison?
This position will acquire a robust experience in applying classroom knowledge and theory to practical field applications. There will be active engagement in establishing relationships with Environmental Health professionals. They will get to learn Environmental Health Operations (Policy, Permits, Programs & Procedures), and will shadow Environmental Health staff, and network with Environmental Health professionals. Under general direction of the Environmental Health Manager, assists the Environmental Health staff in completing routine functions and ongoing projects. Tasks require following standard procedures, which are of average difficulty and require some decisions and judgment about the approach or sequence of procedures to be used. Deadlines and priorities in work assignments are set by the Environmental Health Manager or inherent in the task to be performed. Position requires limited contact with the public. Contact with the public is usually structured and accompanied by an Environmental Health Specialist.
- Assists in Environmental Health Specialists in daily activities, collects samples, data, and compiles research on designated topics.
- Assists in administrative tasks, data entry, phone answering, and attends various meetings.
- May drive own or Town-owned vehicle to pick up or deliver needed materials.
- May be asked to perform additional job duties that are directly, indirectly or completely unrelated to normal job functions in the course of presenting certain Town special events.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent. Prefer individuals working on completion of Bachelor’s Degree in environmental health, health science, public health, health studies or related fields; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Clear Criminal Background check and pre-employment drug screen.
- Knowledge of general office policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of environmental health and vector control.
- Skilled in interacting with the public and staff tactfully and professionally.
- Skilled in typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
- Skilled in maintaining confidentiality.
- Skilled in basic mathematics.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both outdoors and indoors. May be exposed to outside weather conditions. Incumbent will occasionally be expected to attend weekend inspections, holiday, and special events.
This is a part-time non-benefited position. Routine schedule is generally 30-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Schedule may be modified if department needs arise. May be required to work overtime if needed.
