After School Group Leader
The Town of Amherst Recreation Department is seeking multiple After School Group Leaders to be part of Primetime team that provides high quality care experiences for children K-6. This position is 3-18 hours per week and qualified applicants must be over 18 and successfully pass CORI, SORI and SAFIS fingerprinting background checks. Job Summary:
As a team leader for the After-School Program, the Group Leader/Counselor provides after-school day care educational and recreational experiences for children and guides and directs activities.

Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Site Coordinator following department philosophy, town rules regulations, state laws established department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Uses judgement in decision making and determining appropriate courses of action.

Supervision Given: Responsible for safety and instruction to a group of up to ten children.

Major Duties:
  • Designs, plans, implements, and leads a wide range of educational and recreational activities for small groups of children and for the entire After-School Program; Manages children’s activities, issues instruction, provides direction, monitors activities, and provides guidance.
  • Works with collaboratively with other staff to establish and maintain positive atmosphere for Program participants.
  • Assists the Site Coordinator in the maintenance of participant attendance record; Completes accident reports, incident reports, and evaluations; Submits reports and evaluations to the Site Coordinator in a timely manner.
  • Assists in conducting inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Makes regular contacts with public school employees, other agencies, parents, staff, supervision, other instructors, and children, where most contacts involve an exchange of information, and instruction. Models and implements philosophy of department. Performs similar or related work as required.

Minimum Qualification:
High School Degree or equivalent PLUS one to three years of demonstrated experience leading, guiding, and planning children’s educational and recreational activities; OR any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must have First Aid and CPR certifications or the ability to acquire certifications within three months of hire.
  • Must be able to successfully pass CORI and SORI screens and SAFIS fingerprinting.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Safety, and other trainings as required by the local town or state.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.
  • Experience in creating educational and recreational curricula.
  • Knowledgeable about child development, motivational, and child psychology techniques.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge. Knowledge of learning and recreational programs for children. Knowledge to design engaging material, and educational and recreational activities for child care environment. Knowledge to complete administrative tasks such as producing incident and other reports. Knowledge to plan, organize, and implement programming. Knowledge of child psychology and development to manage children. Knowledge and initiative to design curricula. Knowledge to apply learning from Child Abuse and Safety trainings. Knowledge to maintain required certifications. Knowledge to manage safety of children.

Ability. Communicate effectively and efficiently both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate in a second language is helpful. Ability to be understood. Ability to interact and communicate respectfully with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Competent in computer operations and software such as MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to operate telephone and other standard office equipment. Ability to coordinate child care program activities. Ability to operate tools and equipment specifically designed for children. Ability to successfully engage children in recreational and educational activities. Ability to assist with instructions and implement programming for special needs children. Ability to establish positive atmosphere for children, staff, and parents. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Skill to perform administrative duties including taking inventory of materials and supplies. Skill to design educational materials and recreational activities. Skill to communicate with diverse populations, supervision, staff, colleagues, children, parents. Skill to provide stimulation and to engage children in learning. Skill to instruct or assist with instruction for special needs children. Skill to analyze data and write reports. Skill to implementing child psychology and child development knowledge.

This position is required to stand or sit, talk and hear for extended periods; is frequently required to walk, stoop, bend; uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaches with hands and arms; specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; ability to operate office equipment including a keyboard and telephone; frequently lifts up to 40 lbs.

Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in office/day care conditions, with frequent out-of-door events requiring exposure to weather conditions, noise levels are moderate to loud. Operates computers, telephone, copiers, facsimile machines, and other standard office equipment. Operates various types of learning equipment and tools for children.
