What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outer Limits Summer Program Counselor position at Town of Andover?
Counselors are responsible for group(s) of children on a daily basis: Ensure children's safety, manage children's behavior and act as a role model and mentor, model constructive participation in all daily activities, work closely with Director(s) & AYS staff to ensure safety of all children.
The Outer Limits Summer program is for youth entering 6th through 9th grade and is hosted at the Comier Youth Center. Participants will participate in a wide range of enrichment and recreational activities at the Comier Youth Center and frequently takes trips to Pomps Pond, Rec Park, Greater Lawrance Boating Club, various hiking trails and nature reserves and a weekly out of town field trip (Boundless Adventures, Jay Gees, Canobie Lake Park, Water Country, etc.). Outer Limits typically has between 60 and 70 youth per week and is staffed by 9-12 Seasonal Staff members and supported by Full Time AYS staff.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Program Director(s), Supervisors & Full-Time AYS Staff
- Supervises program participants to ensure the safety of youth.
- Assist with the daily operations of the day-to-day schedule.
- Create a safe environment; follow and enforce program rules.
- Plan/ implement age-appropriate activities including arts and crafts, games, sports, theme days, boating and swimming.
- Must be CPR/ first aid certified, able to perform basic first aid skills.
- Create an environment that welcomes participants, families and staff.
- Foster positive relationships among participants and other staff.
- Demonstrate knowledge of AYS values, rules and policies and model that behavior for all program participants.
- Communicate with other staff and directors affectively.
- Be punctual, organized and energetic.
- Assume responsibility for the safety of participants at all times.
- Perform basic housekeeping tasks.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Applicants must be 17 years of age or older and have experience working with children, preferably in a summer or recreational program setting.
- Certification in CPR/First Aid.
- Assist in the case of an emergency.
- Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions (heat/noise, etc.).
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
- Identify and respond to hazards and traumatic events.
- Work with different age and skill levels.
- Requires substantial physical strength, stamina and agility to participate in one to multiday outdoor activities, such as backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing or mountain biking.
- Duties require periods of heavy lifting and physical activity.
- Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of patrons.
