Definition
Skilled manual work and operation of various equipment and vehicles used to maintain the town's lighting and electrical equipment, alarms and communications systems; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Building Maintenance, following departmental rules, regulations and policies, requiring the ability to plan and perform operations to complete assigned task or tasks according to a prescribed time schedule, but referring unusual problems to the supervisor.
Performs functions which are generally well defined and limited in scope but which may involve a choice of two or more approaches to well precedented problems.
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions, toxic acids, fumes and chemicals and regular exposure to accidental injury which could result in occupational disability; frequently required to work in proximity to high voltage power sources, work overhead, and in high places, such as poles and roof-tops. The employee is required to respond to weather-related emergencies.
The employee operates a light truck and a bucket truck, and a variety of hand and power tools, including pneumatic and electrical drills, wood and metal power saws, cable and wire strippers, and pavement and concrete breakers.
The employee has limited contact with the general public and frequent contact with other town departments and tradesmen.
Errors could result in death or personal injury, injury to others, delay or loss of service, damage to buildings or equipment or legal repercussions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for ongoing maintenance and new installations of all lighting and electrical equipment in town buildings, roof top units, exterior areas and town properties, including the Redevelopment Department's rental properties.
Tests and services all working equipment for safety hazards or malfunctions before problems develop.
Performs scheduled service and lubrication of all heavy duty motors on a regular basis.
Ensures that all emergency lighting and related equipment is operational and maintains generators.
Ensures that a supply of necessary electrical parts and materials is readily available in the stockroom.
Performs electrical maintenance and installation of electrical and emergency gear on Department of Public Works equipment.
Loads and unloads trucks; picks up and hauls material.
Maintains the readiness of the assigned vehicle; ensures that all usual and customary tools and safety equipment are readily available and secured.
Regularly assesses the condition of vehicles, ladders, lifting equipment, tools and other assigned equipment; keeps vehicle clean inside and out, checks all safety equipment, and reports any defects to a supervisor; tests equipment to determine satisfactory condition following repair; inspects equipment and reviews work practices and operating procedures to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety codes and standards, and keeps work area and equipment and tools clean, neat, orderly safe and secure.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school or vocational school diploma; three years of experience as a licensed electrician; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
Valid Massachusetts Journeyman's Electrician's License
Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver's License
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques, equipment, and procedures used to maintain lighting and electrical equipment. Knowledge of the operation of electric powered mechanical equipment.
Ability to operate and maintain motor equipment, power tools and hand tools. Ability to interact in an effective manner with fellow employees, managers, other agencies, regulators, and vendors. Ability to read, write, and speak English. Ability to read and understand all instructions and diagrams for the installation of equipment. Ability to respond and act quickly in emergencies to minimize down time due to equipment failure, loss of lighting, or loss of heat.
Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Skill in operation of required equipment and tools. Competent computer skills including ability to use a work order system and understanding of Energy Management Systems.
Physical Requirements
Strenuous physical effort is generally required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, speak, hear, reach with hands and arms, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, and climb. Stamina is required to work in adverse weather conditions; required to work in confined spaces and lift or move items weighing up to 60 pounds. Physical ability is required to use power and hand tools, drive a light truck and operate lifting equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine and complex documents.
