The Town of Berwick is seeking an additional Transfer Station Attendant for 16 hours on Saturday and Sunday's. The hours are 8:00AM-4:00PM.
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Transfer Station Attendant assists in the operations of the Transfer Station, under the direct supervision of the Transfer Station Supervisor. This is repetitive, labor-type work involving the operation of equipment to process refuse and debris. The Transfer Station Attendant is responsible for enforcing the established rules and regulations governing the Transfer Station, coordinating the disposal and transfer of rubbish and debris, overseeing the recycling operations and interacting with the public.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Directs incoming vehicles to proper designated areas
- Checks vehicles for proper permits and turns away users who do not have proper permits
- Policies types of materials and debris being disposed and ensures that prohibited materials are not disposed of
- Assists residents of offloading materials when appropriate
- Enforces policies and rules and regulations government the operations of the Transfer Station
- Operates the compactor
- Supervises separation of trash by residents
- Maintains appropriate piles of materials; newspapers, magazines, cardboard, aluminum cans and demolition materials; when appropriate
- Explains Transfer Station procedures to the general public and monitors cargo to ensure prohibited materials are not disposed of
- Collects appropriate fees and issues receipts for all fees collected
- Preforms daily housekeeping duties
- Works in the capacity of the Transfer Station Supervisor in their absence
- Notifies the Transfer Station Supervisor of and hazardous or potential hazards at the Transfer Station
- Must get along with others and work in a professional manner
- Maintains regular, predictable, and reliable attendance
- Maintains excellent communication and fosters a collaborative working environment with all departments as well as with the public
- Maintains cleanliness and safety at the Transfer Station
- Places an emphasis on safety, efficiency, quality and productivity
- Follows all Town and Department policies
- Performs related work as required
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
· Thorough knowledge of the functions and operational methods of Transfer Station equipment
· Knowledge of standard practices, procedures, and related safety regulations
· Knowledge possible hazards and applicable safety rules
· Knowledge of field safety

· Operate Transfer Station equipment independently with or without supervision

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Experience and Education/Training:
- High School diploma or equivalent
· One (1) year experience in working in a Transfer Station; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Frequent exposure to extreme inclement weather conditions and temperatures. Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment, including a compactor and backhoe. Vision and hearing adequate to perform the essential function of the job are required.
Moderate to heavy physical effort under adverse field conditions is required involving long periods of standing/moving, climbing, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects up to 50lbs. The employee must be capable of working a long duration of hours.
