Traffic Signal Technician I: This is an entry-level position within the Traffic Division’s traffic signal technician series. This position is distinguished from the Technician II by the performance of limited and routine tasks and duties assigned. The Technician I is typically used as a training platform with employees having only limited or no directly related work experience. 

Traffic Signal Technician II: This is a mid-level position within the Traffic Division’s traffic signal technician series.  This position is distinguished from the Technician I by the performance of the full range of tasks and duties assigned. The Technician II receives only occasional instruction or assistance and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies associated with the Division. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (Technician I and Technician II):

  • Performs routine and semi-complex traffic signal, street light, and school beacon maintenance, troubleshooting and repair functions related to signals, electrical systems, and hardware. May provide supervisor with field level status and recommend decisions regarding the operation of traffic signals. Operates or uses a variety of tools and equipment in performance of these duties.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance inspections of traffic control equipment, and coordinates contractor for annual maintenance inspections.
  • Provide recommendations based on field level experience to supervisor. Conducts routine and semi-complex construction inspection duties associated with new signal installations. Reviews and makes recommendations to supervisor regarding equipment specification submittals, equipment inspection, and construction inspection assistance.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of traffic equipment.
  • Maintains record of daily work events for each signal visit through the work order and asset management system.
  • Assists with signal modifications, traffic control and various tasks.
  • Investigates and responds to routine complaints regarding traffic signals.
  • Assists supervisor with underground infrastructure locates related to traffic signals and street lighting facilities.
  • Fills in for traffic signal section manager in their absence as necessary.
  • May assist other traffic maintenance technicians in the repair and maintenance of street signs, waterborne and thermoplastic pavement markings, flashers, and pedestrian beacons, as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

    **Traffic Signal Technician I and II positions may be assigned after-hours, on-call duty on a rotating schedule. These positions perform and coordinate emergency and after hours’ repair operations.

    **Traffic Signal Technician I and II positions are part of the Town’s snow removal program. Will have scheduled on-call responsibilities through the winter months to remove snow using a 4-wheel drive pickup and/or heavy equipment. Snow removal shifts are typically 12 hours.**

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

    Traffic Signal Technician I:

    Generally, a High School diploma or GED; preferred supplemented by 12 months’ electrical experience with emphasis in traffic signals; IMSA Traffic Signal Level I certification required, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, as coursework and testing is made available; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid Colorado Driver’s License is required. 

    Traffic Signal Technician II:

    Generally, a High School diploma or GED; supplemented by 18–24 months’ electrical experience with emphasis in traffic signals, or minimum six months with the Town of Castle Rock as a Traffic Signal Technician I; IMSA level II Traffic Signal Field or Bench Technician certification required, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid Colorado Driver’s License is required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Technician I and II):

    • Knowledge of tools, techniques, and best practices used in performing traffic control maintenance functions and applicable safety procedures. 
    • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as it relates to traffic signal, work zone safety and traffic control.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
    • Ability to communicate effectively, including responding appropriately to complaints about signal operation.
    • Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to follow written and oral directions.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes overtime and to work a rotating on-call schedule which requires after-hours response. 

       

      Physical Demands:

      • Moderate physical work to include lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling items weighing up to 50 lbs.
      • Ability to perform activities that may involve standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, and/or twisting.
      • Ability to perform activities that require considerable muscular exertion and/or physical strain, as well as continuous mental and/or visual demand where duties are potentially hazardous and require continuous alertness and/or activity. 
      • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
      • Ability to drive to and physically access all work sites in the office and outdoors to perform duties, potentially in any weather and environmental conditions, including possible exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes, gases, odors, noise, wetness and humidity.

       

      Work Environment:

      Equipment Used: 

      • Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer system
      • Uses tools and equipment specific to performing maintenance on signals, electrical systems, and hardware
      • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

       

      Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and driving record check prior to commencing employment.
