Chapel Hill Transit has an exciting opportunity for energetic, committed, and mission-driven individuals. We are seeking to hire Student Transit Operators – no experience necessary! You’ll work with our experienced and dedicated training staff to:
- Get your Commercial Driver’s License
- Learn how to operate our buses safely and comfortably.
- Learn how to drive our routes confidently and reliably.
We’ll pay you to train, cover your licensing fees, and provide flexible schedules that work with your classes. Chapel Hill Transit will also provide ongoing coaching and training to help you grow and develop throughout your career.
Safely operates transit vehicles to pick up and transport customers while adhering to transit vehicle route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous manner
Completes familiarization with system and safety features; geography and roadways of an assigned route and of the entire service area; traffic rules, regulations and laws, and transfer points.
Provides information on bus services to customers.
Receives and transmits two-way radio messages involving accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or other authorized CHT business utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure customer and individual safety.
Performs vehicle operations at varying hours, including days, nights, weekends and holidays, as required by service demands.
Writes reports and completes forms as required, may prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents incidents, breakdowns and mechanical defects, as required at the end of their shift.

Physical Demands
Team Members use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and assist customers regularly with mobility impairment including but not limited to pushing wheelchairs, lifting some light or heavy weight objects.
Work Environment
The work is typically performed in a vehicle and outdoors.
Education
High school diploma or equivalency or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties.
Current student at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill or other local college/university.

Certification
Possession of North Carolina State Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement and no Air Brake Restriction. If you do not currently have a CDL, must have ability to acquire NC CDL Class B Learners Permit prior to the start of training.
