Park Maintenance Intern
Location: Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex, Cortland, NY
Department: Parks and Recreation
Reports to: Town of Cortlandville Rec Director and Park Maintenance Supervisor
Dates: Spring Semester - February 1st – May 9th
Summer Semester - May 19th – August 10th
Position Overview: Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex, located in beautiful Cortland, NY, is seeking a dedicated and motivated Park Maintenance Intern to assist with the upkeep of Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex, park amenities, and surrounding landscapes. This internship offers hands-on experience in park and facility maintenance, with opportunities to work on both athletic field preparation and general park beautification.
Responsibilities:
- Turf Field Maintenance: Assist in the maintenance of sports fields, including turf care (sweeping, aeration, adding infill), lining, and equipment setup (mounds, screens, etc.).
- Landscaping: Help with general landscaping duties such as planting, mulching, trimming, weeding, watering, and lawn care.
- Facility Maintenance: Perform maintenance tasks in park facilities, such as cleaning restrooms, repairing benches, picnic areas, and ensuring safety and cleanliness throughout the complex.
- Ball Field Maintenance: Assist other park maintenance staff with any and all ball field maintenance tasks.. (Lining, water pumping, wracking, etc.)
- Trail Maintenance: Assist other park maintenance staff with trail maintenance such as trail inspection, line painting, meet setup, etc..
- Event Support: Help with the setup and breakdown for events, including sporting events, tournaments, and community gatherings.
- Seasonal Tasks: Depending on the season, assist with snow removal, leaf collection, and preparing facilities for different weather conditions.
- Safety Checks: Conduct routine inspections of the park to identify areas needing repair or improvements, ensuring facilities are safe and accessible to visitors.
- Waste Management: Support the collection and proper disposal of waste and recycling to maintain a clean, eco-friendly environment.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Current students or recent graduates pursuing a degree in Parks and Recreation, Sports management, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred.
- Physical Ability: Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, walking, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset to work effectively with staff and other team members.
- Work Ethic: A positive attitude and willingness to take on a variety of tasks in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to identify areas that require attention and ensure that tasks are completed to a high standard of quality.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience operating lawn care equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc.).
- Familiarity with sports field maintenance techniques or turf care.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and use maintenance tools and machinery safely.
- First Aid or CPR certification is a plus but not required.
Compensation:
- Stipend: Amount TBD
- Hours: Flexible, typically 20–40 hours per week, depending on availability and scheduling needs.
