Equipment Operator - Public Works Department
The Town of Cumberland is hiring a full-time Equipment Operator. This position involves a combination of skilled and semi-skilled work within the Public Works Department. The successful candidate must be able to drive and operate a truck with snowplow and wing, front-end loader with a bucket, and other miscellaneous road maintenance equipment. Must be extremely dependable and able to perform heavy physical labor and able to work in all weather conditions. Will be required to work other than normal working hours during storms and emergency events. Must possess a valid State of Maine Class B Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
Nature of Work: This position involves a combination of skilled and semi-skilled work within the Public Works Department. In addition to performing general laborer duties such as road patching, brushing and hauling, the position also involves operating heavy road maintenance equipment with complex controls in a safe and efficient manner.
Work is carried out under the general supervision of the Foreman. However, the position reports directly to the Public Works Director. Work is evaluated based on day to day performance and results achieved.
Primary Job Functions
- Inspect assigned vehicle and perform minor preventative maintenance and associated manual tasks to correct safety problems as necessary.
- Determine safe and efficient methods of operation of all Town equipment.
- Drive and operate a dump truck with snowplow and wing.
- Operate a backhoe and/or trackhoe in the maintenance and construction of roads and other public facilities.
- Safely operate a front-end loader with a bucket size of two and one-half to four yards.
- Operate a grader in repair and maintenance of roads, shoulders, and other roadway features.
- Safely operate other miscellaneous road maintenance equipment, including road brooms, rollers, dozers, front-end loaders, etc.
- Respond courteously to the general public.
- Performs a variety of manual tasks requiring the use of hand tools and hand held power tools as required.
- Will be required to work other than normal working hours.
- Performs related duties as required.
Essential Functions
- Ability to acquire and maintain a Maine Class B Commercial Driver’s license.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
- Ability to interact positively with the public.
- Ability to speak, read, and write English at the 12th grade level.
- Ability to express oneself in such a way that one is readily and clearly understood, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to hear within three feet and on the telephone.
- Ability to lift, push and pull objects weighing up to 60 lbs.
- Ability to twist, bend and reach.
- Ability to arrange or deal with tasks in order of importance.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to maintain composure in difficult and emotionally challenging situations.
Desirable Training and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and two years of paid manual and/or field work experience and 24 months experience operating heavy equipment.
Necessary Special Requirement: Must have a Class B Driver’s license from the state of Maine. As a condition of employment in this classification, as required by federal regulations, the applicant selected must submit to drug testing and test negative for the presence of controlled substances; sign a Consent for Release of Information for each employer and background check; and successfully pass a background check and a CDL background information check. The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical examination prior to employment.
