What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Plans Examiner - Structural position at Town of Davie?
Under supervision of the Chief Structural Inspector, performs technical work associated with the reviewing of structural plans to assure compliance with the Florida Building Code, occasionally performing structural field inspections, and a variety of other duties associated with enforcement of the Florida Building Code.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications for construction plans and designs, reviews proposed plans for conformance to applicable codes and regulations.
- Performs systematic site inspections of skilled trades work for new and existing construction within the city, to ensure compliance with all applicable City, State, and Federal code and regulatory requirements in their respective trades, e.g., structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing.
- Verifies compliance with approved building permits, plans, and specifications; reviews and approves workmanship of completed projects.
- Collaborates with independent contractors and subcontractors, engineers, architects, homeowners, and internal administrative support to ensure all required documentation is completed and submitted for approval of requested permits and licenses.
- Identifies compliance problems and issues code violations; meets with violators and the general public to explain and interpret city codes and advises violator of expected time frame to correct infraction; performs re-inspection to determine if corrections have been made to
achieve compliance. - Reviews, maintains and updates all files, documents, records, and reports of inspections activities and findings.
- Communicates with Building Official and Chief Inspector on any problems, code issues, or regulatory requirements that have not been resolved.

- Maintains current knowledge of trends and regulatory developments for application to functional areas undercharge; attends annual continuing education courses for re-certification.
- Provides assistance and support to technical level Inspectors with moderately complex issues.
- As needed, responds to after-hours emergency situations and evaluates life and safety hazards relating to public or private structures.
- Assists the Building Official and Chief Structural Inspector with the management of the division as required by them.
- Serve as a Division liaison for the implementation of new software and other information technology upgrades.
EDUCATION:
REQUIRED:
- Graduation from an accredited High School or GED.
REQUIRED:
- Must meet all the requirements for appointment as a Structural Plans Examiner as specified by the Florida Building Code, Chapter 1, Broward County Amendments, 104.10
- A valid Class "E" Florida driver's license.
- Certification as a Building Plans Examiner from the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) or the ability to obtain the certification within 60 days;
- Be able to obtain a Building Plans Examiner certification from the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) within 60 days.

- 100% paid by the Town for single coverage, 50% paid by the Town for dependents.
- Schedule: 4 day work week – 10 hours per day (Monday-Thursday)
- Leave:
- Holidays – 13 days per year.
- Sick Leave – 3.69 hours accrued per pay period
- Vacation Leave – Accrue 2 weeks per year, accrual rate increases every 5 years (capped at 4 weeks after 10 years of service).
- Birthday Leave – 1 day per year after successfully passing probation
- Quality Service – 1 day per year after successfully passing probation and other conditions.
- Wellness Days – 2 days per year after successfully passing probation.
- Pension/Retirement:
- Town Sponsored Pension – mandatory 3% contributions per pay period.
- 457 Deferred Compensation Plan - Employee is entitled to make voluntary contributions through the payroll to the Town sponsored 457 deferred compensation plan only.
- Uniforms: Provided by the Department.
- The selection process will include successfully meeting the minimum requirements of each of the following: an oral assessment, background investigation and a medical examination which includes a drug screening test and physical examination.
