ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR
QUALIFIED APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR FULL TIME POSITION OF ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR FOR THE DENNIS PUBLIC LIBRARY. THIS POSITION WILL WORK UNDER THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR.
EMPLOYEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING INFORMATION SERVICES TO LIBRARY PATRONS IN ACCORDANCE WITH PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS, INCLUDING THE USE OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS AND THE INTERNET. EMPLOYEE ASSISTS THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR IN DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING A QUALITY LIBRARY COLLECTION, AND DEVELOPING PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS. EMPLOYEE IS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ALL SIMILAR OR RELATED DUTIES.

1. PERFORMS INFORMATION SERVICES; ASSISTS PATRONS WITH REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION OR MATERIALS; ASSISTS PATRONS IN THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS; SEARCHES SOURCES; PROVIDES REFERRALS; TEACHES PATRONS AND TRAINS STAFF ON THE USE OF NEW DATA BASES AND TECHNIQUES ON HOW TO USE THE LIBRARY, COMPUTER RESOURCES AND ON-LINE CATALOG, VIRTUAL CATALOG, INTER-LIBRARY LOAN, AND THE USE OF THE CLAMS SYSTEM FOR BORROWING FROM OTHER LIBRARIES. ASSIST PATRONS WITH TECHNOLOGY NEEDS AND TROUBLESHOOTING ON PUBLIC (LIBRARY OWNED) AND PERSONAL DEVICES. INSTRUCT PATRONS IN THE USE OF E-MATERIALS, INCLUDING E-BOOKS, E-AUDIO, AND STREAMING SERVICES.
2. COLLABORATES ON THE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS. PROMOTES AND PUBLICIZES LIBRARY ACTIVITIES; PREPARES PRESS RELEASES AND OTHER PUBLIC RELATIONS MATERIALS.
3. PERFORMS READER’S ADVISORY SERVICES.
4. COLLABORATES WITH THE DIRECTOR IN THE PURCHASING OF BOOKS, SUPPLIES, EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER LIBRARY MATERIALS; IN ADDING AND DISCARDING ALL COLLECTION MATERIALS, AND ESTABLISHING COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICIES.
5. PREPARES GRANT PROPOSALS AND RELATED MATERIALS.
6. PROCESSES VARIOUS DOCUMENTS (INTER-LIBRARY LOAN REQUESTS, BORROWER REGISTRATIONS) BASED ON KNOWLEDGE OF LIBRARY FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS.
7. CHECKS MATERIALS IN AND OUT AT THE CIRCULATION DESK; REGISTERS NEW PATRONS; ANSWERS TELEPHONE; ASSISTS PATRONS WITH RESERVE AND OVERDUE MATERIALS; ASSESSES AND COLLECTS FINES AS A CIRCULATION DESK BACK-UP.
8. WORKS WITH COMMUNITY AND BUSINESSES, CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, SENIOR CENTER, AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE RESOURCES AS REQUESTED.
9. SERVES AS LIBRARY REPRESENTATIVE ON CLAMS COMMITTEES AS REQUESTED; ATTENDS WORKSHOPS AND RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS. REMAINS ABREAST OF ISSUES, PRACTICES, AND TRENDS IN LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY.
10. PERFORMS MISCELLANEOUS TYPING; SHELVES LIBRARY MATERIALS AND PERIODICALLY READS SHELVES; MAKES PHOTOCOPIES; COLLABORATES ON SPECIAL PROJECTS.
11. INTERACTS APPROPRIATELY WITH PATRONS OF ALL AGES TO MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE LIBRARY ATMOSPHERE, RESPONDS TO COMPLAINTS OF INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR.
12. OPENS AND CLOSES LIBRARY, ASSURES FOR THE SECURITY AND PROPER MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION OF THE BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT.
13. PERFORMS SIMILAR OR RELATED WORK AS REQUIRED OR AS SITUATION DICTATES.
14. ASSUME DIRECTORIAL RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE ABSENCE OF THE DIRECTOR, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, OVERSEEING STAFF, FACILITATING PATRON INTERACTIONS AS NEEDED, CONTACTING NECESSARY PARTIES IN RELATION TO BUILDING REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE.
15. MAINTAIN THE LIBRARY’S DIGITAL PRESENCE, INCLUDING UPDATING THE WEBSITE, DIGITAL RESOURCES AND DATABASES, AND SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: POSITION REQUIRES A BACHELOR’S DEGREE WITH A MASTER’S DEGREE IN LIBRARY SCIENCE, FROM AN ALA ACCREDITED GRADUATE SCHOOL PREFERRED; AND THREE TO FIVE (3-5) YEARS OF PROGRESSIVELY RESPONSIBLE EXPERIENCE IN PROFESSIONAL LIBRARY WORK, INCLUDING ADULT REFERENCE AND READER’S SERVICES; OR ANY EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE WHICH PROVIDES THE REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB.
