The Town of Dennis seeks qualified applicants for full-time (40hrs.) positions of Mechanic II for the Department of Public Works. The Mechanic II supervises the maintenance facility and performs manual work for the various operational areas of the Department of Public Works, including operating heavy trucks and specialized equipment, performing a variety of maintenance and repair duties, and ensuring the proper working condition of equipment, vehicles, and other Public Works-owned property.
Essential duties include, but not limited to :
- Responsible for daily project completion and assignment of work and work crew; supervises and trains seasonal and permanent personnel.
- Operates equipment, heavy and light trucks with or without trailers.
- Experience with diagnosis, repair, preventative and routine maintenance to equipment, heavy and light trucks and passenger vehicles in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Required to prepare cost estimates for repairs
- Required to operate and repair various power tools and other specialized equipment.
- Assists with snow and ice operations and other weather-related emergencies.
- Responsibility for the good order and discipline of assigned crew members.
- Responsible for the oversight of assignments utilizing proper safety precautions in accordance with established procedures of self and assigned crew members.
- Interacts with employees, vendors and the general public in a courteous, helpful, and respectful manner.
- Maintains inventory and orders repair parts and supplies.
- Engages in welding and fabrication.
- Schedules maintenance and repairs to meet goals and objectives and effectively using outside resources when necessary; estimates costs of repairs.
- Manages fleet work order system and tracks lifetime costs of vehicle and equipment inventory on a daily basis.
- Uses specialized diagnostic equipment.
High school diploma or equivalent and 5 or more years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience. Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required at time of hire. DOT physical and self-certified with Massachusetts RMV for interstate operation.
The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. Work may be continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. May be required to be on call for 24 hours or be under prolonged pressure during emergency situations.
Work requires moderate and intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, carrying the object(s), and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing, or walking for the full workday may also be involved. A great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job. Duties involve assignments requiring application of hand-eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes. Frequent computer uses.
Minimum wage is $30.88 / hour (MLDC G15 / S1), plus eligible stipends and comprehensive benefits package.
