GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Nurse Supervisor, the Public Health Nurse is to provide optimal physical and emotional health of the school population through direct care, education, guidance, and consultation. This position is affiliated with the Fairfield Public Nurses Union.
- Evaluates the health and development status of pupils according to state, local, and agency policies via assessment screening
- Reports positive findings to parents and coordinates the referral and follow up process
- Counsels, develops and implements plans with pupils, parents and school personnel to eliminate, minimize or cope with health problems that interfere with optimal teaching or learning
- Promotes preventive health measures
- Provides communicable disease control measures, including surveillance, monitoring and notification
- Serves as health consultant to school personnel
- Participates in individual’s school’s planning and placement team
- Participates in classroom teaching or provides in-service programs for classroom teachers in appropriate subject areas
- Provides first aid for accidents and illness
- Protects health and safety of school population by assessing environmental health factors and establishing plans for provision of emergency care for illness and injury
- Maintains up-to-date, accurate health records
- Administers medications according to State regulations, physician’s orders and agency school health policy
- Carries out special procedures, e.g., intermittent catheterization, in accordance with physician’s orders
- Provides immunizations against preventable childhood diseases
- Assists physician with health assessments done in school as needed.
- Participation in program development for specific problems at individual schools
- Arrange for other health services available through school or community as necessary
- On-site orientation of new school nurses to the school health program
- Home visits for school-related problems
- Educating school population to health facilities/systems in the community
- Assist in orientation of new staff to school health program
- Provide situational experience and supervision to university students as needed
- In schools where school health aides are assigned, the nurse is responsible for supervision of the school health aide. Supervision includes orientation, ongoing guidance and performance evaluations
- Performs other related duties as requested
- Registered Nurse with Baccalaureate Degree in nursing or related field or Diploma/Associate Degree with at least 15 academic credits in required areas of study
- Must have one (1) year of nursing experience within the last five (5) years
SCHEDULE
- Monday – Friday, hours dependent upon assignment
