The Town of Garner is seeking a creative, energetic parks and recreation professional to join the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department to support the growth of its athletic and recreational programs. The position performs professional and administrative work developing, promoting, and conducting a variety of athletic and recreational programs and activities for youth and adults, which include recreational leagues, summer camps and out-of-school time, fitness and educational programs, and special events. The ideal candidate will have experience collaborating with team members and the community, a keen awareness of innovations in the parks and recreation sector, and a commitment to public service.
Examples of Duties:
- Plans and delivers recreation programs and activities with an emphasis on athletic programming including recreational sports leagues; researches, plans, coordinates and implements programs in assigned areas such as pre school, youth, teen, and adults.
- Plans summer or school break camp activities and programs involving youth and teens; oversees activities; oversees work of contracted instructors, seasonal employees, facility attendants and volunteers.
- Plans new or enhanced activities, classes and programs in assigned areas; figures costs; monitors registration, research potential additional programs and events; purchases supplies and monitors budget.
- Lead or conducts programs and related activities, including leagues and tournaments, answers parent and participant questions about events and concerns.
- Works with marketing team to design promotional materials and advertise programs; maintains participant statistics; maintains records for leagues, programs, and activities.
- Assists with recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising volunteers, instructors, contractors, and part-time staff; submits payroll.
- Assures participant safety and security; calls for medical or law enforcement support when needed.
- Oversees facility operations during events; assists with coordinating or scheduling building maintenance and room set-up; works with public rentals and use of space.
- Assists other departmental staff with the details of special town and departmental events; Assists with department accreditation.
- May operate a passenger vehicle for field trips and outings.
- Performs related tasks as required.
The Department is currently recruiting for two vacancies for Recreation Specialist Positions. Based on department needs and the experience and skills of candidates, it is expected that one position will largely focus on Athletics and one in Youth Recreational Programming. The focus of the positions will determine the scope of responsibilities and work schedule of the positions.
The Youth Programming Position will report to and collaborate with the Recreation Program Manager to plan, coordinate, and implement a variety of recreational activities for preschool, youth and teen participants, including summer camp and out-of-school time programming. The primary work schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm and will include some nights and weekends as determined by programming needs.
The Athletics Position will report to and collaborate with the Athletics Program Manager to plan, organize and lead indoor and outdoor athletic leagues and programs. This position’s primary responsibilities occur on nights and weekends; the incumbent will need to be available to work regularly work nights and weekends throughout the year. The regular work schedule for this position will be 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM daily, with responsibilities Monday through Saturday as determined by programming coverage responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in parks and recreation, sports management or related field and a minimum of 2 years of recreation programming experience is required
- A driver's license valid in North Carolina and a good driving record are required.
- A CPR and/or First Aid certification; or the ability to obtain the certification within 12 months of employment.
- Certified Recreation & Parks Professional (CPRP) is preferred
