POSTED MARCH 28, 2025. APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED 11:59 P.M. ON APRIL 11, 2025. THIS FULL-TIME ROLE IS 40 HOURS PER WEEK AND IS PART OF THE IUOE BARGAINING UNIT.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor incumbent will perform general highway maintenance work at the semi – skilled level involving the maintenance and construction of roads, drainage, roadsides and related facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Operates heavy trucks during winter storm events.
- Responsible for making routine highway maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures.
- Operates power equipment and heavy trucks.
- Patches asphalt and other road surfaces. Repairs and replaces highway barriers. Clears catch basins. Cuts brush and clears land. Maintains the cleanliness and service of roadways and public areas.
- Fabricates and installs or repairs traffic signs and signals, as assigned. Lifts and carries heavy objects.
- Checks and corrects fluid levels and performs basic service on vehicles and equipment prior to use.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Assists in pipe laying, catch basin construction and road resurfacing operations.
- On emergency standby or call-out to handle emergency conditions, as required.
- Performs other duties as required.

- Maintains confidentiality of records and information as appropriate responsibly and performs basic inspection of them prior to use.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
- Good knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of highway maintenance and manual laboring.
- Good knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in highway maintenance and manual laboring.
- Good Skill in the use of the hand tools and power equipment in highway maintenance and manual laboring.
- Considerable ability to perform highway maintenance and manual laboring safely, effectively, and efficiently.
- Considerable ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn Town procedures.
- Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
- Good ability to communicate orally.
- Employee will be subject to random Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Highway Administration Regulations.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be mobile, able to push/pull/lift objects of more than 75 pounds, stand or sit for prolonged periods, and be able to perform simple motor skills such as walking.
- Able to perform manipulative skills which require hand-eye coordination, such as shifting gears on vehicle. Able to perform tasks that require hand-arm steadiness such as operating power equipment.
- Must be able to see objects far away as in driving during day and night time hours, able to discriminate colors as in vehicle or house color, colors of wires or warning lights. Able to hear normal sounds with some background noise; distinguish voice patterns and communicate through human speech, as in communicating via 2-way radio.
- Able to concentrate on minimal to moderate detail with some interruption; able to concentrate on fine detail with some interruption; able to attend to task/function for more than 60 minutes at a time and remember task/assignment for full shift and occasionally remember multiple tasks/ assignments given to self and others during the course of the day. Able to understand and relate to specific ideas, concept and theories behind several related concepts.
- May be exposed to fluctuating temperatures; seasonal outdoor weather, grease, oil and odors; loud or unpleasant noises, high humidity, wetness or burns; exposure to dust; hazardous materials such as chemicals, toxins, cytotoxins, or other poisonous substances such as chlorine.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Completion of the tenth grade.
- Two years of manual laboring experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:
- Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with airbrakes endorsement or greater. License must not be restricted to vehicles having automatic transmission
