Transit Planner / Senior Transit Planner
Monday through Friday: 8 AM - 4:30 PM (occasional evenings as needed)
Salary Range: $55,000 - $70,000
The South County Connector is a demand response transit program serving 17,000 residents over 250 square miles in Southern Berkshire County, MA. The program operates 7 days a week, providing over 2,400 monthly rides within the towns of Egremont, Great Barrington, Monterey, Stockbridge, West Stockbridge, Sheffield -- and now to Canaan, CT. The Connector also provides rides for seniors and persons with disabilities to Pittsfield and New Marlborough.

The Transit Planner / Senior Transit Planner works under the supervision of the Director of Planning and Community Development on the tasks necessary to manage the long-range planning, grant-writing, and service planning aspects of the Town of Great Barrington's Transit Department. The responsibilities of the Transit Planner / Senior Transit Planner include but may not be limited to the following:
Responsibilities:
- Oversee service planning activities for the Transit program.
- Determine budget, fares, and service levels for the Transit program, in collaboration with the Transit Operations Manager and Director of Planning & Community Development.
- In coordination with Operations staff, plan and implement operational logistics (zone boundaries, hours of operation, software, vehicle usage).
- Assist with developing and tracking the annual program budget (appx. $500,000).
- In collaboration with the Director of Planning & Community Development, write grant applications on behalf of the program, and gather necessary support—imperative for long-term program success.
- Ensure appropriate procurement policies and documentation for purchasing are followed, in coordination with the Director of Planning & Community Development.
- Coordinate with local organizations to create partnerships and boost ridership
- Coordinate with the Scheduling & Compliance Specialist to manage reporting for state and federal funding.
- In collaboration with the Assistant Transit Operations Manager and the Scheduling & Compliance Specialist, work to ensure accurate monthly reporting for local, state, and federal funding.
- Coordinate with the Town of Great Barrington's Regional Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC) to accomplish the goals of the program and member communities.
- Perform similar duties as required.
The duties herein may be revised based on the program, available funding, and the employee’s performance.
Experience:
- Grant Writing experience required.
- Knowledge of public transit required.
- 2 years of Transportation Planning experience highly desired, especially if hired at the Senior Transit Planner level.
- Bachelor or Master's degree in a related field (e.g., Urban/Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Policy, Business) preferred, but not required.
- Strong knowledge of budgeting principles and financial management.
- Strong administrative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
