REPORTS TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR

LOCATION: 32 CHURCH STREET

HOURS: 7:30AM-4:30PM

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the maintenance and general custodial duties of the Community Center, including cleaning the building and setting up and taking down furniture and equipment for meetings and programs. Member of the Guilford Employee Association (GEA).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with considerable independence in assigned areas under the general direction of the Parks and Recreation Director or designee.
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to custodial work performed in accordance with cleanliness needs, such as: vacuuming, sweeping, dust mopping all floors, stairs, and carpeting; dusting all furniture, counters, file cabinets, ledges and sills, performing general office cleaning on a daily basis.
  • Sets up and breaks down tables, chairs, equipment, including audio-visual equipment, etc. for meetings and events.
  • Collects rubbish and recycling from individual offices and places in respective containers for disposal.
  • Cleans and sanitizes all restrooms, including stainless steel toilet partitions, and drinking fountains, daily or more often, as necessary.
  • Cleans and sanitizes the restrooms at Jacobs Beach, Lake Quonnipaug, and Bittner Park during the season, as necessary.
  • Strips, waxes and buffs all tile floors utilizing hand and power equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, etc., as necessary.
  • Locks and unlocks doors, arms and disarms the alarm system, when necessary.
  • Paints doors, trim, and walls, when necessary.
  • Replaces ceiling tiles and light bulbs.
  • Performs minor plumbing and electrical repairs, and carpentry work.
  • Operates and maintains heating, venting, and air conditioning system, including checking thermostats and monitoring energy usage through the computer in the building.
  • Inspects and reports any issues with generator, circulator pumps, air handler units, and boilers.
  • Receives and stores supplies.
  • Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and makes requisitions, as needed.
  • Shovels snow and sands walkways.
  • Follows all applicable safety procedures and regulations, including maintaining inventory of all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) sheets and properly labeling all chemicals.
  • Orders, purchases, and/or transports supplies.
  • Required to, at times, handle multiple responsibilities.
  • Complies with all proper safety procedures and regulations and ensures that everyone in the department follows proper safety procedures and regulations.
  • Treats other employees, and any others with whom there is contact, with courtesy, respect and professionalism.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in building janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, trip hazards, and proper storage of chemicals.
  • Knowledge of heating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Skills in the operation of power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to pass a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE) prior to employment and after any on-the-job or off-the-job injuries.
  • Ability to work and review TRANE SC Tracer SC building automation system for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system.
  • Ability to plan work and schedule self-initiated tasks, including working flexible hours as the position may require.
  • Ability to climb ladders, bend and crawl in order to inspect building mechanicals.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local safety and health regulations that would apply to this job.
  • Ability to meet and serve the public pleasantly, tactfully and informatively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and colleagues.
  • Ability to treat other employees, and those with whom they come into contact, including the public, with courtesy, respect and professionalism.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above, there is considerable physical effort required in walking, standing, and climbing while performing duties, under varied conditions, including some disagreeable factors such as climatic conditions, dirt and dust, exposure to normal construction hazards and fumes while performing maintenance and/or custodial work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to eighty (80) pounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school graduation or equivalent and at least one (1) year of employment in building care or and cleaning, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
