Description
This position combines on-the-job experience and mentorship to help prepare individuals for a career in Finance, Accounting, or a related public sector field. The Finance Intern will work collaboratively with Town staff on a variety of Finance and Accounting projects. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Finance Director.
Essential Job Functions
- Assists Finance staff in data collection, organization, and preparation for various projects.
- Conducts research, data analysis, and policy review.
- Assists Finance staff at public meetings.
- Presents report findings at Team and/or Board or Committee meetings.
- Conducts basic administrative functions as needed, including but not limited to data entry, file management, and customer service.
- Contributes to long-term projects in Finance areas such as budget, grants, accounting, policy writing, and purchasing.
- Adheres to policies and procedures established by the Town.
- Regularly demonstrates the Town’s core values of respect, communication, engagement, supportive work environment, and service excellence.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must be currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year degree program (or have relevant work experience) in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Some completed coursework leading to a degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field.
- Strong degree of detail orientation, organization, research, analytical, and time management skills.?
- Strong degree of initiative to proactively find solutions.??
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects independently, including when there are significant deadlines.?
- Familiarity with Office 365, Excel, Word, etc.
- Proficiency in using spreadsheets or comparable financial software.??
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, elected officials, management, and the general public.
- Ability to apply servant leadership principles and the Town’s core values in the performance of duties.
Physical Requirements
This work may require exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with copier/printer, light traffic).
