Job Summary
The Zoning Official plays a critical role in managing and enforcing zoning regulations within the community. This position involves reviewing development proposals, ensuring compliance with local zoning laws, and providing guidance to developers, property owners, and the public on zoning-related matters. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of environmental law, and proficiency in various planning tools and software.
Responsibilities
- Review and evaluate zoning applications and development proposals for compliance with local regulations.
- Conduct site inspections to assess compliance with zoning laws and regulations.
- Prepare reports and presentations for zoning hearings and public meetings.
- Collaborate with other departments, stakeholders, and community members to address zoning issues.
- Utilize GIS software to analyze spatial data related to land use and development.
- Research data collection methods to gather relevant information for zoning decisions.
- Provide technical assistance regarding zoning regulations to the public and other government agencies.
- Stay updated on changes in environmental law and land use planning practices.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma; Associate degree/Advanced Technical preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field is a plus.
- 5 years’ construction experience, 2 years’ experience as Housing Inspector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must possess a current RI Building Inspector Certificate or required to obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.
- Strong research skills with experience in data collection and analysis.
- Knowledge of GIS technology and its application in urban planning is essential.
- Familiarity with environmental law and contract management is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Previous experience in a zoning or planning role is advantageous but not required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $65,000.00 - $84,500.00 per year
