What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Co-Director - Morristown Recreation position at Town of Morristown?
The Town of Morristown is hiring two Summer Camp Co-Directors to manage and maintain oversight of activity coordination for the 2025 Morristown Summer Camp program serving children going into first through fifth grade. These two Co-Director positions must seamlessly and positively collaborate to work in sync with one another, Town staff, and parents/guardians. Co-Directors must collaborate to complete the duties below associated with providing an enriching camp experience for every participant from a diverse population of the greater community. Co-Directors are responsible for developing and supervising all aspects of the operations of the Summer Camp with oversight from the Economic and Community Development Director (ECDD). This is a seasonal position and is not eligible for benefits.
Duties/Responsibilities
Cohesively collaborate with other Co-Director in the program to carry out duties below:
- Oversee the performance and group assignment of camp counselors while ensuring they adhere to camp guidelines and Town policies and engage effectively with campers creating a safe and fun environment
- Organize and manage the schedule for camp staff, ensuring proper coverage for all activities
- Implement and oversee strict adherence to health and safety protocols, including first-aid readiness, emergency procedures, and daily risk assessments
- Serve as the primary point of contact for parent/guardians providing daily updates on campers experiences, behaviors, and upcoming events
- Maintaining accurate daily attendance records
- Provide daily updates to the ECDD and other Town employees as needed
- Assist the ECDD with monitoring registration through registration software system
- Coordinate with community partners including bus company, guest speakers, etc.
- Oversee group activities, schedules, and supplies while providing regular updates to ECDD and other Town employees as needed
- Assist Town Treasurer with collection of account balances and scholarship coordination
- Notify parents/guardians immediately in case of camper injuries, ensure proper documentation and reporting, and implement necessary first aid or medical treatment while following safety protocols
- Develop and carry out a variety of camp activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, events, and team-building exercises
- Tailor activities for different age groups and ensure they align with camp goals
- Plan and conduct counselor training sessions, including necessary certification courses prior to the start of camp, in collaboration with the ECDD and HR Director
- Help manage the camp’s budget, ensuring efficient use of resources for supplies, activities, and programing
- Assign and manage lifeguard rotations, ensuring camper safety during all water activities
- Provide guidance and support to campers with behavioral challenges
- Build positive rapport with campers, parents, and community members
- Adjust daily schedule or activities as needed based on weather conditions, schedule, or other unforeseen circumstances
- Coordinate with cafeteria staff to provide breakfast and lunch for campers
- Act as a Mandated Reporter, ensuring all staff are trained on proper response and ensure protocols are followed
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to plan, organize, and manage camp schedules, activities, staff, and resources efficiently
- Ability to manage camper behavior while following child safety regulations and risk management practices to ensure a safe and enriching environment
- Proven ability to lead, manage, and inspire staff using effective communication, conflict-resolution, proactive training, and teamwork
- Ability to collaborate and communicate timely efficiently and in a timely fashion with co-director, counselors, parents/guardians, community partners, and stakeholders
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Child Education, Early Childhood Education, Recreation, or related fields preferred
- 3-5 years of experience working in a summer camp setting, educational field, childcare, recreation, or a related field
- Lifeguard, Water Safety, CPR, First Aid, and Mandated Reporter certifications preferred (these certifications will be provided as part of training if not already held)
Status: Hourly, Seasonal; Full-time June through August (est. 10 weeks total)
Wages: $26.00-$28.00/hour commensurate with experience
