The Town’s nursing facility, Our Island Home, seeks qualified candidates for the position of Maintenance Assistant. Representative duties include a variety of skilled work including but not limited to general building maintenance and facilities projects as directed by the Facilities Maintenance Manager. Excellent customer service and communication skills essential. Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, as well as vehicle and small gas engine powered equipment preferred. Must hold a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
High School Degree or equivalent; a minimum of one (1) year prior work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Twenty-four (24) hours per week positions available; Union Positions; Starting hourly rate is $27.49 per hour

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintaining the building and all equipment.
Supervision Required: Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, clear, detailed, and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment. Questionable situations are referred to the supervisor. The supervisor reviews the work in progress or upon completion as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibility: The employee is not responsible for the regular supervision of any employees.
- Responsible for the routine maintenance of vehicles, equipment and the repair and/or construction of buildings (interior and exterior) in accordance with OSHA and Life Safety regulations including lubrications and adjustments; assures adequate inventory of frequently needed parts and supplies are available.
- Responsible for the safe transportation of the facility residents.
- Checks the Maintenance Log for necessary repairs or other items responsible for.
- Maintains the physical resources buildings, grounds, lighting, signs and markings etc.
- Required to operate light trucks, vans, tractors, snow plows, mowing machines and powered hands tools.
- Replaces and repairs common furnishings, machinery, medical equipment, structures and hardware as necessary.
- Assist in the cleaning and sanitizing of durable medical equipment and standard furnishing in the facility.
- Monitors safety equipment, ensures resident alarms, wander guards, door alarms and batteries are in proper working order. May be required to attend Safety Committee meetings.
- Ensures all facility chemicals are properly stored, clearly marked, and have SDS sheets for usage.
- Assists in ensuring that proper pest controls measures are in place and monitors for signs of insects or other pests in the facility.
- Meets requirements for all in-service education requirements and attendance per facility policy to maintain any required licenses or certifications.
- Maintains appropriate attendance records; arrives on time for work and is ready to perform assigned tasks.
- Required to meet facility hygiene and dress code standards of appearance.
- Follows necessary infection control and proper hand washing techniques.
- Maintains safe work practices and follows facility safety procedures.
- Follows facility conduct standards, policies and procedures in a drug and alcohol-free work environment.
- Assists other departments in the facility as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with job functions.
