The Water, Sewer, and Drains Division operates and maintains the Town’s water system, including supply, storage, treatment, distribution, and metering; maintains the storm drain system, including compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES); and maintains and cleans the sewer collection system.
CON #25062Responsibilities, among others, include:
Operational
- Organize and direct excavation, trenching, shoring walls when necessary, repairing and installing water and sewer lines, storm drains, hydrants, residential and commercial water and sewer connections, meters, gates, sump pumps or inflow connections, and other related activities.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and pumping stations and appurtenant equipment and provide input into Water Treatment Plant design and operating issues.
- Oversee division personnel including establishing work and vacation schedules, coordinating and assigning personnel for On-Call Program, hiring and conducting performance reviews, and handling complaints within the bounds of established policies, maintaining effective communication with direct reports and supervisor.
- Coordinate confined space entry training and ensure compliance with the DPW’s safety program.
- Collaborate with other divisions in the most effective use of personnel and equipment and, in dealing with emergency situations or unusual workloads.
- Develop division budget recommendations; assist in management of the division’s approved budget; and prepare related reports, analyses, and budgetary justifications.
- Work with the Administrative division to procure required materials, equipment, and supplies to complete projects, maintaining inventory control and distribution of supplies, materials, and equipment, when needed.
- May attend public meetings with the Superintendent to assist in responding to questions and complaints from the public.
- Secondary Distribution Operator license: D1 or D2; if currently hold a D1, the ability to obtain a D2 license within one year of employment.
- OSHA 10 hour Construction Safety and Health Training Certificate.
- Between four (4) to six (6) years of experience, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
- Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an Associates Degree or two years of technical or business school.
- Valid MA Driver’s License.
- Background in water treatment is beneficial but not required.
- Ability to work with a team or independently.
- Demonstrated communication and customer service skills with members of the public.
