What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Town Instructor (Pre-K Program) position at Town of Normal?
The Safety Town Instructor position will report directly to the Youth Programs/Day Camp Supervisor. This position will teach basic road safety to children ages 3-6 years old. Instructor hours depend on the number of rentals scheduled each week/throughout the season. Each shift is generally 2 hours in length. The working season for this position is late April through mid-October.
Town of Normal Parks & Recreation Safety Town program is an interactive safety education program developed to teach children important life-saving lessons on traffic, fire, police and pedestrian safety. Children gain experience through riding tricycles, wearing properly fitted helmets and learning the importance of road safety.
Safety Town combines outdoor instructor and the use of a miniature town, designed to provide a complete hands-on experience. The miniature town has a police station, post office and hospital. Within this town, there are working traffic lights, crosswalks, small scale roadways and signs which create an environment for children to practice what they have learned through constructive play.
- Assist with set up and take down of Safety Town equipment
- Instruction of the Safety Town program to the participants
- Be attentive to participants to assure a safe environment
- Assist with keeping storage areas clean and organized
- Ask assistance from parents and volunteers
- Perform First Aid or take care of minor injuries as needed
- Preferred ages is 16 years or older
- Certification in First Aid and/or CPR is preferred (classes provided by NPRD)
- Successful completion of criminal background check
- Ability to communicate appropriately with children ages 3-6 years
- Understanding of how to teach each skill at an age appropriate level
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
- Availability to work flexible hours and varied shifts
- Experience working with youth or background in field of education, Parks & Recreation or another related field
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to squat/crouch/kneel for periods of time when assisting participants on tricycles
- Position sometimes requires the ability to lift, push and pull at least 25 lbs.
- Preferred personal enjoyment of working with pre-school aged children
Salary : $16 - $17
