What are the responsibilities and job description for the Town of Old Lyme Safety Ranger position at Town of Old Lyme?
Public Safety Rangers provide general security services for the Town of Old Lyme under the supervision of the Old Lyme Resident State Troopers office. These seasonal, uniformed employees assist with the maintenance of a safe and enjoyable atmosphere at town facilities. They are primarily responsible for ensuring patron safety and the prevention of unlawful activity through patrol (presence). Public Safety Rangers serve as the eyes and ears of the Police. Public Safety Rangers are unarmed and have neither peace not police officer status. They may be assigned to patrol walking beats, on bicycles and 4WD beach vehicles or in patrol vehicles. Generally working in pairs, Public Safety Rangers maintain order, enforce town ordinances/regulations and answer questions from citizens to support a safe and orderly environment.
Essential Job Functions:

- Patrolling: Regular monitoring of town facilities, including beaches, parks, and other public spaces to deter crime and respond to safety concerns.
- Crowd Control: Support the regular Police Department Staff with managing large gatherings and events to prevent violence and ensure public safety.
- Conflict Resolution: Mediating disputes and de-escalating tense situations within the scope of the training provided.
- Crime Prevention: Support implementation of strategies to reduce the incidence of criminal activity, such as community policing and awareness campaigns.
Required Qualifications:
- 18 years of age at time of appointment
- High school diploma (conferred by time of appointment)
- Valid CT Driver’s License
- Successful completion of Background Check
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPR/First Aid Certified
- Interest in a career in Public Safety
- Resident of Old Lyme

Pay: $17.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week
