What are the responsibilities and job description for the College Student Intern - GIS position at Town of Palm Beach?
The Town offers the College Student Internship Program (hereinafter “the Program”) to incoming college students, current college students, recent graduates (within one year), and students pursuing graduate degrees. It is intended to offer the student an opportunity to incorporate realistic and practical work experiences, not typically found in a classroom setting, into their academic programs. The program provides a supervised work experience for the student that enhances the student’s academic expertise, proficiency in completing tasks, and problem-solving abilities.
The Town of Palm Beach is currently seeking a student assistant with experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to work with our GIS team under the direct supervision of our GIS Analyst. This position performs technical work, including maintaining and improving the GIS Department’s database. The intern will assist with collecting, maintaining, updating, preparing, and compiling various geographic map data as required using GIS software. This may include reports, correspondence, asset maps, utility data, or other documents. The position will also include a heavy focus on field work verifying existing assets currently in the Town’s GIS database. Other tasks include electronically manipulating data files by importing, exporting, creating, or editing data.- Perform data collection in the field in order to verify/validate existing assets or add new assets in the Town’s GIS database.
- Convert various computer aided drafting (CAD) data into GIS data forms (shapefiles, geodatabases, feature classes) and make adjustments to conform to Town standards.
- Create tables/spreadsheets, correspondence, or other documents.
- Perform quality control checks on GIS data layers to ensure they meet Town specifications.
- Compile basic GIS maps using Town standard templates and best practices for cartography and labeling.
2. Academic major in Geography, Geographical Information Systems, Engineering, Geology, Urban Planning, Computer Science, or a related field.
3. Must have verifiable GIS coursework in geography, surveying, engineering, geology, urban design, computer science, or a related field.
4. Must have experience using ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro
5. Experience in GIS applications is a plus
Ability to work a minimum of 12 hours per week not to exceed a maximum of 20 hours per week (typically between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday). Interns are limited to a maximum of 1000 hours in any 12-month period.

- Must possess strong computer skills to include the ESRI Software Suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcCatalog, etc.), and Microsoft Office including Excel.

- Ability to communicate effectively, maintain good working relationships and exercise initiative and use sound judgment in making decisions.
- Ability to analyze problems, gather and organize data, and arrive at valid conclusions.
