The Town of South Hadley, Department of Public Works, seeks qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Motor Equipment Operator/Truck Driver. The successful candidate will perform skilled and semi-skilled work in operating heavy and light motorized equipment for construction, maintenance, and repair projects of the Public Works Highway Division. An Equipment Operator is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Operating a backhoe, front-end loader, snow plowing/removal trucks and equipment, street sweeper, sewer jet truck, dump trucks and other heavy/light gasoline and diesel-powered motorized equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment and vehicles and notifies supervisor of equipment malfunctions requiring more substantial maintenance efforts.
- May assist mechanic as required to repair/maintain equipment.
- Performs general labor duties for the Highway Division within Public Works, such as: paving/patching roadways and sidewalks; cleaning, repairing and installing drains, catch basins and culverts; assisting in installing/repairing sewer mains/services; painting rooms, moving, transporting furniture; and setting up tables and chairs for special town functions.
- Drives snow plowing equipment, hauling, shovels snow and salts roads.
- Trims brush, keeps sidewalks and roads clear;
- May perform carpentry work, including making street signs and mounts them.
- Responds to after hour weather emergencies to operate snow plowing/removal equipment and performs other related operations and general labor duties.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
The following requirements may be substituted by an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job:
- High school diploma is required plus at least three years of public works experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Class B minimum and a Massachusetts Hoisting License Class 2B minimum are also required.
Status and Compensation:
This is a full-time, union, benefitted position. This position is FLSA non-exempt (hourly, eligible for OT) and regular work schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday: 7am- 3:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch break. The successful candidate will also be required to be on call and work nights, weekends, and holidays. The position is classified as a Grade 12 position with a starting hourly rate between $21.49 to $24.42, DOQ.
