The Town of South Hadley is seeking a diligent and detail-oriented part-time Local Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer to join our Building Department. Under the supervision of the Building Commissioner, the position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and compliance of buildings within our community by enforcing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Building Code and South Hadley Zoning Bylaws. Summary of Responsibilities (see job description for complete details):
- Enforce compliance with the Town's zoning bylaws and report potential fire and sanitary code violations to the appropriate authorities. Prepare and deliver violation letters as required.
- Respond to citizen complaints and agency reports of code violations, conduct on-site inspections, issue permits and certificates, and prepare detailed reports.
- Administer and enforce code provisions, inspect multi-family housing and residential properties, and maintain accurate records.
- Collaborate with Health, Planning, and Police departments on nuisance housing issues and neighborhood regeneration projects.
- Perform routine and complex technical inspections of buildings to ensure compliance with state and local codes.
- Educate residents about code compliance and regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
The following requirements may be substituted by an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job:
- Bachelor’s degree in building construction, design, or trades, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3 to 5 years of related experience.
- Certification as a Local Inspector as defined in Massachusetts General Laws (or ability to obtain certification within the required timeframe).
- Valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Driver's License.
- Knowledge of the Massachusetts State Building Code, local zoning bylaws, and other applicable state statutes and regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and plans.
- Effective communication, problem-solving, and customer-service skills.
Status and Compensation:
This is an FLSA non-exempt, non-union, non-benefit-eligible position with an anticipated schedule of up to 19 hours per week, with an anticipated hiring range of $27.82 to $28.95 per hour per hour depending on qualifications.
