LIBRARY ASSISTANT 3 - CHILDREN'S SERVICES
Planning, marketing, and administering programs for patrons aged 0-12.
NATURE OF WORK
Performs basic as well as higher level clerical functions related to the day-to-day operations of the library in the areas of programming, collection maintenance, technical services, and circulation. Work involves responsibility for providing services to library patrons and performing general administrative services. Duties may include planning and administering programs, purchasing and cataloging new materials, representing the Library at outreach events, and providing research assistance. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, and communication skills.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Completes all functions of a Library Assistant 1 and Library Assistant 2 as required.
- Answers basic reference questions, reader’s advisory, and research inquiries. Refers advanced queries to a professional librarian.
- Develops and conducts age appropriate programming for library users.
- Administers multiple programs per week for which objectives and general procedures have been established or outlined (i.e. storytime).
- Represents the Library and Town of South Windsor at outreach events.
- Maintains the effectiveness of portions of the collection by weeding and purchasing library materials as directed by supervisor.
- Uses statistics and patron feedback to evaluate decisions surrounding collection development. and programming.
- Advertises for programs using print and electronic means. Prepares posters and graphics using computer design programs.
- Provides feedback to section head on policies, procedures, and long term planning for the department.
- Gathers statistics on circulation, programming, section usage, and more as needed.
- Receives oral or written instructions from supervisor.
- Organizes work according to established procedures.
- Performs clerical or technical tasks in various units as assigned.
- Provides exemplary customer service to library users.
- Maintains familiarity with library policies and procedures. Enforces library policies as needed.
- Utilizes SWPL’s integrated library system software and public catalog website at a high competency.
- Assists library patrons in the use of library materials.
- Performs cataloging tasks including new item record creation, item record modification, and rapid update.
- Registers patrons for programs and room reservations.
- Maintains records, logs, or other statistical information as directed by supervisor.
- Effectively works with multiple age groups in different departments as needed.
- Reports work accomplished to a supervisor.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for a unit in the temporary absence of a professional librarian.
- Receives and responds to general information requests by telephone or in writing.
- Assists in completing an annual collection inventory.
- Makes minor repairs to books, documents, periodicals, and materials as needed.
- Checks in orders received and distributes items to relevant departments as necessary.
- Monitors supplies for reordering.
- Makes suggestions regarding the purchase of equipment, and supplies needed for the maintenance of the collection.
- Actively pursues professional growth opportunities, including keeping current of new library trends through readings and workshops.
- Performs related work and assists with special projects as required.
