LIBRARY ASSISTANT 3NATURE OF WORKPerforms basic as well as higher level clerical functions related to the day-to-day operations of the library in the areas of programming, collection maintenance, technical services, and circulation. Work involves responsibility for providing services to library patrons and performing general administrative services. Duties may include planning and administering programs, purchasing and cataloging new materials, representing the Library at outreach events, and providing research assistance. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, and communication skills.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSCompletes all functions of a Library Assistant 1 and Library Assistant 2 as required.Answers basic reference questions, readers advisory, and research inquiries. Refers advanced queries to a professional librarian.Develops and conducts age appropriate programming for library users.Administers multiple programs per week for which objectives and general procedures have been established or outlined (i.e. storytime).Represents the Library and Town of South Windsor at outreach events.Maintains the effectiveness of portions of the collection by weeding and purchasing library materials as directed by supervisor.Uses statistics and patron feedback to evaluate decisions surrounding collection development. and programming.Advertises for programs using print and electronic means.
