The Town of Southbridge Department of Public Works introduces a great opportunity for two full-time Maintenance Man/Equipment Operator union positions.

The Position:
The DPW Maintenance Man/Equipment Operator is responsible for the skilled work in the operation of automotive and power equipment of a wide variety typical to the construction trade but excludes those designated in the complex construction and maintenance class under heavy equipment. Additionally, this position further involves semi-skilled manual work in operation, maintenance and cleaning of water and wastewater equipment, custodial care in buildings, concrete and masonry work, building and grounds maintenance and participates in the Town’s snow removal program. The starting salary of the position is $22.86 hourly.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent and advanced training certification and/or training in construction trade work.
- Three to five years of experience working in a building or construction environment. Two years as a supervisor or work leader preferred.
- Knowledge of hazard and safety precautions pertaining to departmental operations.
- Availability for call-ins during different weather conditions including snow and ice.
Minimum Entrance Certifications:
- Must have and maintain a valid Class B CDL license with air brakes or better Massachusetts license mandatory.
- Valid 1C or 1D licenses preferred. This is required to be obtained within 6 months of appointment.
- Demonstrated ability and appropriate licenses to operate backhoe, loader, etc. not mandatory but preference may be given to applicants possessing the said abilities and licenses.
- A Massachusetts Pesticide certification, Massachusetts Applicator’s license, and 3A and 2B Hoisting License preferred.
Our Ideal Candidate:
- Considerable knowledge of vehicles, equipment, hand tools, and power tools associated with DPW operations.
- Ability to interpret work orders, supervise and direct the activities of work crews, and the ability to supervise multiple job tasks under variable conditions.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply data, drawings, and instructions for assigned work.
- Ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions.
- Ability to lift between 50 and 100 lbs.
