Equipment Operator II - Utilities
Annual Salary Range: $38,897 - $58,345
This position is considered essential personnel. Must be able to operate a wide range of equipment requiring moderate to high skill and perform a variety of other duties as assigned including supervision of work crews. Employees may work independently, as part of a crew, or as a crew leader, with general direction from Supervisor or Superintendent. A significant portion of the duties of an Equipment Operator II require a high level of skill in operation of complex heavy construction equipment. Must posses a Class A CDL with an excellent driving record along with tanker endorsement. NC Certifications in C-Distribution and Collections IV preferred.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
- Employees in this class operate a wide range of equipment in tasks requiring moderate to high skill and perform a variety of other duties as assigned including supervision of work crews.
- Employees may work independently, as part of a crew, or as a crew leader.
A significant portion of the duties of an Equipment Operator II require a high level of skill in operation of complex heavy construction equipment.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Operates the motor grader to grade dirt roads, grade and repair road shoulders and cut ditches.
- Operates backhoes to dig ditches; maintains grade by eye and works with precision to avoid gas, electric cable, phone and other lines.
- Operates front end loader to load dirt, backfill ditches, and clear work sites.
- Operates a variety of other equipment including street sweeper, combination sewer cleaner, sewer rodder, tractors, dump and pickup trucks, asphalt roller, and tamp.
- Assists other divisions in tasks requiring skilled equipment operation.
- Assists in general functions of streets and water/sewer divisions.
- Performs periodic and preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Serves as crew leader in absence of Superintendent or Labor Supervisor.
- Trains Equipment Operator I in the operation of heavy equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of a wide range of heavy equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of safe operating procedures for equipment used in performing assigned tasks.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and town ordinances relevant to operating heavy equipment and work zone safety.
- Ability to supervise subordinates.
- Ability to interpret superintendents instructions, grade stakes and perform work accordingly.
- Ability to understand and follow oral/written instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with superintendent and other employees.
Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled manual labor.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Two or more years experience in which principal duties were operation of heavy equipment. Supervisory experience highly desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid Class A North Carolina commercial driver's license with an excellent driving record.
