What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Clerk Treasurer position at Town of Speedway?
This position is primarily responsible for assisting the Clerk-Treasurer by managing utility billing and payments, including providing customer service to the public in-person, over the phone, and through electronic communication. A candidate with a strong background in accounting or finance may have opportunities for expanded accounting duties once utility billing is mastered.
What you get to do:
-Post cash, check, phone, and internet payments to billing software daily
-Collaborate with other deputy-clerks to provide customer service to the public in person, over the phone and online, including utility customers, residents applying for permits and licenses, local businesses, and contractors
-Prepare utility billing statements monthly and quarterly
-Process new utility applications, maintain customer accounts, and finalize accounts when service ends
-Monitor and analyze collections, apply late fees, issue disconnect letters and other notices, and process utility liens
-Evaluate requests for refunds and bill adjustments
-Coordinate with water meter readers and distribution crew regarding meter reading routes and work orders
-Evaluate utility billing processes and make recommendations for improvements
Other duties:
-Crosstrain on other functions in the Clerk-Treasurer's office, including licensing and permitting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and financial reporting
-Ad-hoc projects as assigned, including addressing inefficiencies in processes and analyzing data for utility rate changes and financial reporting
Experience and Requirements:
-Comfortable working in an environment with multiple and sometimes shifting priorities
-Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, public administration, or similar field of study preferred
-Excellent problem-solving skills, written and oral communication, and customer service
-Ability to interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and established procedures
-Strong teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate and negotiate conflict with others
Work Environment: Office setting
Schedule: Typically, the Clerk-Treasurer's Office is open to the public on Monday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Tuesday thru Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The position requires some work outside those hours and flexing of schedules while coordinating with co-workers to maintain coverage of hours open to the public.

Starting Pay: starting at $40,000
