Job Description
Under regular supervision, performs skilled labor in the maintenance of Town parks, playgrounds, and related facilities. Work involves operating equipment, performing litter control, cleaning facilities, landscaping, and performing other grounds activities.
Job Responsibilities
- Maintains weed control by weed eating and cutting grass.
- Edges sidewalks throughout the Town.
- Places mulch and/or pine straw around the foliage.
- Rakes leaves and clears sidewalks using a blower.
- Disposes tree limbs and other debris.
- Installs and maintains playground equipment, Christmas lights, irrigation systems, and other equipment.
- Performs various painting activities as necessary.
- Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports (such as oral instructions and memorandums).
- Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation (such as oral reports).
- Refers to employee handbook, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
- Operates/utilizes various types of equipment, tools, and machinery (such as lawn mower, weed eater, edger, leaf blower, pressure washer, etc.).
- Uses a variety of tools (such as chainsaw, tree pruners, rake, pitchfork, shovel, etc.); and a variety of supplies (such as mulch, pine straw, grass seed, topsoil, general office supplies, etc).
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such Senior Crew Chief, Parks and Recreation Director, coworkers, other Town employees, and the general public).
- Performs general housekeeping in the department.
- Washes the inside and outside of department trucks.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by nine to twelve months’ practical training and experience in lawn maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess valid South Carolina driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Grounds Maintenance Tech
- Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Grounds Maintenance Technician I.
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Knowledge of groundskeeping methods, tools and equipment; skill in landscape installation and maintenance work.
- Knowledge of and skill in irrigation system installation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of athletic maintenance and repair work and is able to assist in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of parks and recreation system components.
- Knowledge of the machinery, materials and supplies required for daily maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
- Ability to operate assigned vehicles and equipment with safety.
- Ability to work effectively despite occasional exposure to heat/cold, odors, toxic agents/hazardous materials, noise, wetness, humidity, machinery hazards, dusts, vibrations, traversing uneven terrain, etc.
- Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
- Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
- Ability to read and interpret technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
- Ability to prepare simple records and reports with accuracy and in a timely manner.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics tools, carpenters’ tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, shovels, rakes, etc. Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier weight (up to 100 pounds).
