General Statement of Duties
Performs equipment operation work as the truck driver engaged in collecting yard waste and trash from throughout the Town. Work may be performed on a rear-loader or knuckle boom truck.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class operates a truck and supervises a crew in collecting leaves, grass, limbs, and other debris from the Town. Work involves the operation of heavy, motorized equipment. While equipment operation is the primary focus of this class, the employee is subject to loading the truck and, on occasion, being assigned as a yard waste collector. Work may involve the operation of a truck where another collector is assigned or the operation of a knuckle boom truck or collection truck where the operator is the only employee assigned. The employee is subject to working in an outside environment, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, and moving mechanical parts. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor.

Essential Functions
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Drives truck on assigned routes, overseeing the work of subordinate personnel.
- Monitors the safety and activities of workers.
- Answers questions from the public as necessary.
- Assembles garbage bins and recycling containers.
- Delivers trash can and recycling bins.
- Picks up piles of trash and debris left by contractors.
- Picks up storm debris.
- Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on the truck.
- Maintains paperwork on truck maintenance.
- Drives truck to the landfill for disposal of debris.
- Drives truck during leaf collection season.
- Operates knuckle boom loader.
- Assists other crew members in picking up limbs, grass clippings, and leaves at yard-side.
- Assists other public works departments as needed.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor.
- Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
- General knowledge of the street layout of the town.
- Ability to oversee a crew.
- Ability to be flexible in assigned work.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens.
- Ability to drive a large truck.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
