Wilson County Solid Waste Services is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator. This is a fulltime position with all applicable benefits. Salary range shown depends upon required certifications and is commensurate with experience and excellent benefits package available. Performs skilled trades work operating heavy equipment in the maintenance of the County Landfill, performing equipment maintenance and repairs, assisting the public, and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Landfill Supervisor.

Please note: Final candidates subject to pre-employment drug screen and background check (includes motor vehicle records).

  2.5% Salary Increase after completion of NC SWANA Landfill Specialist training.


Operates heavy equipment such as front end loaders, excavators, forklifts, bulldozer, skid steer, compactor, and other vehicles and equipment used in the disposal of Solid Waste at the Landfill.
 
Observes waste (MSW, Yard Waste, C&D, and LCID) being dumped at the Landfill for proper materials; separates out hazardous or banned materials not allowed; explains proper access and use of the Landfill to the public.

Observes to ensure that recyclables and electronics are placed in correct locations; unloads recyclables and electronics; monitors and removes contaminants from recycling containers; and separates recyclable materials and loads into shipping containers.

Compacts and covers refuse in C&D area; loads mulch for customers in Yard Waste area; checks and maintains level grade; fertilizes and seeds hills and slopes; and mows and maintains Landfill acreage.

Performs preventive maintenance and general repairs and adjustments to heavy equipment; inspects equipment; and assists the mechanic. 

Performs other related work as required.

  • Ability to read and write and considerable experience with heavy equipment operation, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. 
  • Valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain forklift training and certification within six months of employment.
  • Completion of NC SWANA Landfill Specialist training within 1 year of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including trucks, tractors, compactors, tire machines, arc welders, oxy-acetylene torches, mechanics tools, pressure washers, etc. Must be able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs, or other parts of body to grasp, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical requirements are for Medium Work.
 
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
 
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of manuals, parts books, handbooks, warranties, forms, records, etc.  Requires the ability to prepare maintenance records, fuel tickets, forms, etc., using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
 
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in mechanical terminology.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
 
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using power equipment and tools.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as mechanical equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
 
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS,  AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
 
Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of the standard mechanical components of trucks and heavy equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work and shop operations.

Working knowledge of electrical systems of trucks and heavy equipment.

Skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of trucks and heavy equipment.

Ability to diagnose common defects in automotive, construction and related equipment and to repair such defects with reasonable proficiency.

Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in detecting malfunctions and in solving mechanical problems.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform the manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
