The Town of Warsaw (population 2,300), located an hour from Richmond and Fredericksburg in Virginia’s historic and picturesque Northern Neck Region, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Accounting Clerk. This position will serve as part of our administrative staff, ensuring consistent and efficient operations of all accounting functions, greeting and assisting the public with their phone calls and in-person requests, preparing and maintaining files, data entry, intermittent clerk duties, and all other duties as assigned.
This position is full-time with an excellent benefits package that includes health, vision and dental insurance at no cost to the employee, paid time off and holiday pay that includes all Federal and State holidays, and inclusion into the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The employee will also receive occasional overtime/compensatory compensation. Shift hours are typically 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours to assist with Town meetings or events.
Salary Range: $40,000 - $50,000 , DOQ/DOE
Please Note – Any professional certifications/degree(s) or substantive work history within the field/local government may allow for a higher salary range.
Position Duties
- Enters data for collections and accounting, keying in payments and revenue.
- Receives receipts from employees and accounts for checks and cash received daily. Responsible for daily balancing of the cash drawer and petty cash.
- Files various fiscal transaction documents. Searches documents for posting errors.
- Oversees purchasing and accounts receivable, creates purchase orders and generates the appropriate checks for signatures and payment.
- Collates, sorts, and compiles fiscal data in accordance with policies, procedures, and standard practices.
- Assists the public with the general intake of questions and/or transactions – utility billing, taxes, parking fines, business licenses, etc.
- Prepares daily bank deposit and works with colleagues and Town Treasurer on finalizing daily work.
- Performs miscellaneous clerical work, including service as the Town Planning Commission Clerk and reserve Clerk for the Town Council, as needed.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Town Treasurer or other Town leadership.
Employment Requirements
· Possession of valid VA Motor Vehicle License.
· Previous local government experience is highly preferred.
· Previous accounting experience is required.
· Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, as needed.
· Knowledge of current and emerging technologies and requirements within the field.
· Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required.
· High School Diploma or GED is required. College experience is preferred but not required.
· Ability to work independently and maintain ethical and professional relationships with coworkers, leadership, and outside organizations.
· Knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
