MAINTAINER 1 – TOWN OF WINDHAM PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Windham, CT

The Town of Windham seeks qualified applicants for the position of Maintainer 1. This is a full-time position (40 hrs/wk @ $25.00/hr). Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, a Maintainer 1 is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repair of town roads, parks, cemeteries, and other town facilities. Must be knowledgeable in the proper use and operation of various equipment, including lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, wood chippers, chain saws, and snow blowers.

Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut Driver’s License.

State of Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), required.

Bilingual (English and Spanish), preferred.

MAINTAINER 1

JOB DESCRIPTION

Employees working in this job classification work under the supervision of the Director of Public Works, or his/her designee.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Mows and trims town-owned parks and cemeteries
  • Rakes leaves and debris; picks up litter
  • Edges flower beds and trees and spreads mulch around the same
  • Edges and aligns base paths on baseball and softball fields
  • Measures and adjusts pitcher’s mound, home plate, and bases, as required by league guidelines
  • Makes repairs to fences, and performs maintenance of the same
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including:
  • Zero turn riding mower; roadside mower; rear-mount mower
  • Gas-powered snowblower
  • Dump truck with plow and deicing equipment
  • Gas-powered trimmer
  • Gas-powered wood and brush chipper
  • Gas-powered leaf vacuum
  • Performs daily maintenance on equipment, as required
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities, as required
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this position

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with Town officials, public officials, the general public, vendors, other departments and agencies, supervisors, subordinates, and coworkers

Education, Experience, and Training:

A high school or trade school diploma or GED certificate

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Must possess and maintain a State of Connecticut Class B CDL (including a Medical Card)
  • Must maintain an OSHA 10-Hour Card
  • Must successfully complete a Competent Person Course
  • Must successfully complete a Trench and Excavation Safety Course
  • Must obtain and maintain CT DEEP certificate

Physical Requirements:

  • Must possess the strength, stamina, and mobility necessary to perform heavy physical work outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, including motor vehicle traffic
  • Must be able to move and/or lift materials and equipment up to 75 pounds; and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment
