Hiring Range: This position's base/starting wage is $21.52 per hour, which increases based on years of service/experience.

Work Schedule:Monday thru Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm some weekends and holidays

NATURE OF WORK
As a member of the ParksDivision, Individuals in this position perform semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the urban forest including the use of hand tools, power tools, and various equipment

Most positions require that the individual work Monday through Friday, which may also require weekend and evening hours on a regular or occasional basis. This temporary employment may be scheduled through the year on a full-time basis depending on the needs of the town but will not exceed six months in length (or 1,040 hours, whichever comes first). This is strictly temporary employment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Individuals work under the direct supervision/leadership of the Town Forester to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances. Individuals report directly to the Town Forester.

No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The individual in the Forestry Maintenance Technician role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations, and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
  • Repairs irrigation systems, inspects for leaks, and assures water timing is appropriate to not interfere with public usage of parks and open spaces.
  • Plants, cares for and protects trees by assuring proper location, area supplies root and canopy space and the appropriate soil quality & water supply.
  • Assist with measuring and marking trees and collects data on tree conditions.
  • Performs maintenance at tree nursery that includes all tree maintenance functions.
  • Assists with identifying defective trees such as diseased and insect-damaged trees and shrubbery.
  • Assists with hazard tree analysis.  Reports trees that are hazardous, (hanging branches and fallen tree limbs).
  • Ensures safety regulations and procedures are adhered to.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.
  • Conducts tree inventories.
  • Completes reports as necessary.
  • Performs pre- and post-inspections on vehicles and equipment.
OTHER DUTIES
Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
  • Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  • Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience and education in landscaping, arboriculture, forestry and related fields are preferred but not required
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
  • Must have a current Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one upon hire, that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards
  • ISA and/or CLT certification preferred but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Ability to safely operate various forestry and parks related equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge ofbasis plant maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the Town of Windsor and the department.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
  • Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with people inside and outside the organization using verbal and written methods.
  • Ability to perform the necessary functions of the position and to make appropriate decisions consistent with the job expectations and position description.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.

MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED
Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:
  • Equipment: Position requires the use of a variety of equipment: brush chipper, aerial lift truck, tree spade, chainsaw, tractor, backhoe, loader, rototiller, dump truck, truck and trailer, weed whip, chemical sprayers and various hand and power tools.
  • Materials: Position requires the use of a variety of materials: fertilizer, pesticides, soil and mulch
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The physical activities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

The physical requirements of this position are considered Heavy Work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment; determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.

The employee may be subject to the following environmental conditions: inside, such an office setting; outside, with little to no effective protection from weather; extreme cold, typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour; extreme heat, temperatures typically above 100 degrees of periods of more than one hour; subject to noise and vibration.

The employee is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals. The employee is subject to atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system, or the skin.

This position is considered safety-sensitive because the individual is responsible for their safety as well as the safety of others. Performing these job functions under the influence of drugs or alcohol would pose significant dangers.
