Northwest Park Youth Development Specialist
The Town of Windsor, CT seeks a Youth Development Specialist to work at Northwest Parks Camp Foxfire. Children ages 4-14 learn about nature and the environment at the parks 473-acre campus featuring native forests, fields, wetlands, and heritage farm animals. Through active, field-based explorations and age-appropriate outdoor adventures, Camp Foxfire will nurture each child's curiosity and help them gain confidence and self-respect while building relationships with other children and the natural world.
This is a full-time temporary summer position with a start date of Monday, June 16, 2025 and ending Monday, August 11, 2025. Applicants who can commit to all work dates receive hiring preference. The hourly rate is $18.50/per hour. Work schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday Friday, 8:15am-4:30pm. First Aid and CPR training is provided. Onsite housing may be available.
Responsibilities:
- Provide assistance to Camp Teachers in behavioral management and organization of their age groups
- Utilize various techniques to navigate social/emotional conflicts between campers and their peers as needed; engage with children to enhance and encourage learning
- Oversee the Junior Counselor Mentorship Program, a pre-counselor volunteer opportunity for youths ages 14-17, which focuses upon gaining the skills necessary to become a Camp Teacher as well as personal growth and expanded self-esteem through leadership opportunities; model professional work habits
- Possess a genuine passion for working with youths entirely outdoors, in all weather, while maintaining a positive energy and attitude. (Access to indoor/covered spaces for thunderstorms provided)
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences
- Build rapport with campers, parents/guardians, and program staff
- Display high level of commitment and enthusiasm for all camp activities
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of program participants
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree or comparable experience helping teachers in a formal/informal classroom environment; experience working with children of all ages, especially teens
- Enjoy working with youth ages 4 -17 and be motivated to build their comfort and connection to the natural world
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather (including summer heat & humidity and/or rain) and to be physically active for most of an 8-hour day. (This is a physically intensive job that includes significant movement throughout the day, including walking and hiking on uneven terrain, kneeling, bending, and lifting)
- Proven work experience as a Paraprofessional or similar role; patience with children
- Behavioral management experience; experience working with children with special needs
