Summary Job Description: Working under the direct supervision of the Building Maintainer, the Building Custodian(s) is responsible for the general cleaning and minor maintenance duties of Town buildings.
Mandatory Requirements for all Town Employees: A) You are required to understand and abide-by all safety work practices for yourself and your co-workers. B) You are required to understand and use customer service “best practices” when dealing with the public, peers and co-workers by treating everyone fairly, with understanding, empathy, and professionalism.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Cleans offices, rooms, hallways, stairways, restrooms, locker rooms, breakrooms, kitchens and windows.
- Uses brooms, mops and floor equipment to sweep, mop and polish floors.
- Uses vacuum cleaners and carpet shampooers to clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture and blinds.
- Dusts furniture; wipes countertops and tables; washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors and sills.
- Empties wastebaskets and recycling bins. Empties outdoor trash receptacles on adjacent sidewalks.
- Replenish restroom supplies.
- Replace light bulbs in light fixtures, exit and emergency lights.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs and equipment in meeting rooms.
- Prepare buildings or rooms to be used for private rentals.
- Open and close buildings for weekend and evening meetings, events or private rentals as assigned.
- Performs safety checks of all areas. Secures/locks buildings and sets alarms.
- Check emergency lights, exit lights, and fire extinguishers monthly.
- Run fire suppression systems in designated buildings as required.
- Occasionally assist with the removal of recyclables from Town buildings.
- Occasionally assist in the removal of snow and apply sand/salt from entrances and walkways as needed.
- Performs semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of buildings such as painting and basic plumbing and carpentry.
- Observe OSHA and Town safety standards and practices.
- Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, materials and equipment and advises the purchase of same as needed.
- Completes monthly building maintenance checklists and submits for review and verification.
- Covers duties of other custodians as assigned.
- Performs related work as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None required.
Specific Knowledge and Skills Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. A minimum of one year in custodial and building maintenance experience or closely related work experience preferred.
- Must have valid CT driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Must successfully complete a police background investigation.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques utilized in public building cleaning and maintenance.
- Must demonstrate the ability to apply common sense and demonstrate emotional intelligence.
- Must demonstrate the ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
- Must demonstrate the ability to learn and acquire new job related skills as needed.
- Must demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as with others.
Physical Effort Required:
The physical demands include but are not limited to the following:
Performs heavy cleaning and moving, lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, reaching, standing for long periods of time while using a vacuum cleaner or other cleaning equipment.
Hours and Pay:
This is a part- time, 25 hours per week, union position. Pay rate is $22.32 per hour.
Work hours:
Monday - Friday: 5:00 am - 10:00 am or Monday - Friday: 6:00 am - 11:00 am
