TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking an experienced Field Technician II (Fiber Optic Splicer), to join our team in Tampa, FL.

Summary: The primary responsibilities of the Fiber Optic Splicer is to fusion splice fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings. Read, create and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams and maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work site(s). Take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes, support project timelines, inspect, design and provide accurate records for projects, terminating different types of fiber optic connectors. This position requires fieldwork which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and out-of-normal work hours. Travel will be required and may be up to 50%, depending on the business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Installation, preventive and corrective maintenance of fiber optic cables and network communications equipment.
  • Completes reports, logs and performs shift-to-shift communications in accordance with established policies, procedures and local practices.
  • Responds to corrective maintenance requests or alarms within contract required time frame.
  • Diagnoses and repairs hardware, software, and system issues.
  • Reports the technical status of the system with accuracy and completeness.
  • Restores equipment to operational status as quickly as possible.
  • Isolation of faults in units or components.
  • Field test of units or components to ensure they work correctly before leaving work area.
  • Maintenance of spare equipment and parts following company established policies and guidelines.
  • Manages/trains less experienced technicians.
  • Splice fiber optic cables including loose tube, ribbon, and high-density cables.
  • Construct a proper splice case for butt, and mid-sheath splices, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
  • Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Operate and produce reports using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (ODTR).

Qualifications:

  • Typically requires at least 5 years of experience as a fiber optic splicer.
  • Must successfully complete required background / drug screening that TransCore initiates as part of the hiring process; additionally, successfully complete a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and State Law Enforcement Radio System (SLERS) background screen when required by project.
  • Must be willing and able to work outdoors in various weather conditions; work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed and required
  • Must have attention to details, be self-motivated and have strong work ethic.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record; driving is required for the position.
  • Must obtain an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signal Technician Level I certification within one year of employment, and IMSA Signal Technician II certification within two years of employment.
  • Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification preferred but not required
  • Ability to read roadway plans preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Office/Visio) a plus!
  • Manufacture certifications: Corning Certified Installer (preferred), Corning "See the Light" Testing and Troubleshooting (preferred) but not required.

Education:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

 

Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. 

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, outdoor weather conditions, and moving traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
