Location: This position can be remote or work out of our offices in Oakland or Brooklyn
Reports to: Deputy Director of Policy
Salary: $69,000-$80,000 depending on experience

POSITION SUMMARY
The Policy Coordinator will be a key member of the growing Policy Team, which is part of TLC’s Policy and Programs Department. This role involves collaborating with external partners and TLC’s Legal, Communications, and Programs Teams. The Policy Coordinator will support a community-driven policy strategy, focusing on Black trans women and femmes, disability justice, trans and nonbinary people living with HIV, trans and nonbinary migrants, youth, and communities in the South and Midwest. TLC is particularly interested in opportunities to support external partners challenging criminalization and its consequences.
Primary Responsiblilties
- Track and monitor proposed state and federal legislation, regulatory changes, and executive actions related to trans and nonbinary people, criminalization, HIV policy, and other TLC priority areas.
- Review tracked legislation, regulatory changes, and executive actions, creating summaries suitable for various audiences.
- Analyze collected data for important trends and provide weekly updates to relevant stakeholders within TLC and externally.
- Monitor the implementation and impacts of recent positive and negative legislation, regulatory changes, and executive actions.
- Make recommendations for advocacy strategies supporting positive legislation and opposing negative policies.
- Prepare policy-related resources and tools for internal and external use.
- Collaborate with other organizations and movements tracking legislation.
- Help develop organization-wide response and proactive trans policy and strategy.
- Attend relevant partner and coalition meetings, both virtually and in person.
- Travel to select states for strategy, advocacy, coalition building, and other efforts.
- Attend other conferences and convenings as assigned.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS
- 3 to 5 years of demonstrated experience in tracking state and federal legislation, policy analysis/advocacy, and data collection/analysis.
- Familiarity with policy issues impacting transgender and nonbinary people and people of color, including criminalization, incarceration, immigration, health care access, discrimination, and other issues.
- A clear vision for how public policy work can contribute to the liberatory struggle.
- Knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes.
- A collaborative approach to work both within the organization and with external partners.
- A demonstrated commitment to a broad range of social, racial, and economic justice issues.
- Ability to remain focused on rapid response needs while working toward long-term policy goals in a changing landscape.
- Passion for public policy work through a critical analysis of the role of the state.
- Strong writing, editing, and research skills.
- Attention to detail.
- High levels of initiative, creativity, and good judgment.
- Experience working with databases.
- Willingness and capacity for frequent national travel (pending TLC’s travel restrictions due to COVID-19).
