Job Summary Operate the DP system and VMS (where applicable) Job Description REPORTING: Reports to Chief Mate, Senior Mate or Master SUPERVISION: Supervises Dynamic Positioning Operators Pre-Requisite/ Qualification: High School Diploma (U.S.)/ Proof of Completion of Formal Education or Relevant Craft Certificate (where applicable). Unlimited Dynamic Positioning Certification from a company approved accrediting agency Minimum 3 years experience as a dynamic positioning operator Successful Military Discharge – Preferred for U.S. Knowledge of basic technical calculations required for the safe operation of the marine aspect of the rig. Basic computer skills. Lifeboatman certificate. Graduate of Trade School or University where knowledge and training acquired are applicable to job requirements – Preferred. Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates. Complete company training requirements for the Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator job level as per the training matrix, including in local/regulatory requirements. If applicable, the duties and responsibilities in the safety case for this position must be observed. Full participation in emergency drills and respond to emergency situations as per assigned duties on the station bill. Operational Discipline Requirements: Disciplined application and participation in the company risk management system. This is inclusive of: Understanding and perform the roles and responsibilities as assigned at the pre-job meeting. Understanding the hazards associated with the task. Understanding and effectively implementing the control measures required to mitigate identified hazards. Execute all tasks and task steps in a disciplined manner, following the sequence detailed in the relevant procedures. Recognize at risk behavior or conditions during tasks and call ‘Time out for Safety’ when unsure, or when the job does not go as planned. Participate in After Action Reviews to feedback lessons learned from performing the task. Participate in After Action Reviews to feedback lessons learned from performing the task. HSE Requirements: Report all incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations to supervisors. Actively execute work in accordance with Company Safety Processes, Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) when you do not understand the plan, when an unsafe condition is observed, or perceived, anytime personal impairment is recognized, when it’s not clear what will happen next, or the hazards and associated risks for the task changes. Comply with the company requirements to safeguard ‘lone workers.’ Maintain a safe and organized work area throughout all tasks and on completion of tasks. Incorporate the company risk management process into all tasks, whether working alone or as part of a team. Apply the job planning process during the execution of planned tasks and daily operations. Ensure subordinate personnel are properly trained in the job planning process. Ensure subordinates are trained prior to using the permit to work (PTW) process. Approve all PTW as designated by the Master/OIM through the Control of Work Process; Ensure all task steps and controls are understood and any other activities that may be affected are identified before approving the PTW. Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) whenever an unplanned hazard or a change in the expected results is observed. Ensure that the Company QHSE policies and other programs are communicated to and understood by all personnel. Play an active part in the weekly meetings, FOCUS Improvement Program, and all other Company safety management systems. Ensure that a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained within the Areas of Responsibility. Ensure that subordinates understand their roles as related to the Emergency Response Plan and are capable of responding to emergency situations as designated on the station bill. DUTIES: The underlying expectation is that all duties are carried out in compliance with the Company Operational Discipline expectations and HSE requirements. When considering assignment of duties for the Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator, the Supervisor and the Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator will apply the rules of task planning to determine if the assigned role is appropriate. This means confirming that the individuals involved have the knowledge, skills, and experience to carry out the task, and the task plan complies with policy before they are authorized to proceed. General Duties: Operations/Maintenance: Operate dynamic positioning (DP) equipment. Maintain logbook of all position keeping equipment and relevant engine room equipment. Set up operational parameters for the DP system; ensure that system data is correct. Advise the Chief Mate or Master of potential position loss. Possess full understanding of every line item on the WSOC and associated protocols. Perform Preventive Maintenance on DP equipment; ensure that the system’s performance is not degraded by defective sensors. Ensure that all defects and anomalies are reported to the Chief Mate or Master and relevant department heads. Maintain records of these and ensure that they are corrected adequately. Assist with the operation of the ballast control system where applicable. Operate and understand ballast control system, power management system, bilge system, ventilation system, engine room auxiliaries, drill water system, fuel system, and fire and gas systems. Maintain the rig in a stable condition and at the correct draft and trim. Monitor required engine room alarms and signals and call for assistance prior to problem developing. Monitor all DP room alarms including DP system, VMS, and fire and gas alarms. Prioritize alarm response as necessary to maintain DP system operability by calling for technical assistance or additional DP room help. Periodically visit the drill floor for familiarization with current rig personnel and operations. Assist as directed with rig projects and maintenance. Complete company ISM familiarization material. Assist with running hydrophones and subsea beacons. Sound ballast and bulk tanks. Assist with loading and sampling of bulk products as required. Assist with deck operations as required. Ensure that there is adequate power and reserves of power for the maintenance of position and operations; give immediate attention to any problems. Operate the vessel’s radios as required. Operate the vessel’s marine radar system and weather radar system as required. Perform emergency duties and responsibilities as stated on the Station Bill, Emergency Response Manual and DP Emergency Response Plan. Monitor work boat operations with cameras where possible. Provide supervision to DPOs for any DP operation. Be able to set-up and use all position reference systems, including failure modes and mitigation of problems. Be able to set-up and use all environmental and motion sensors, including failure modes and mitigation of problems. Assist in the use of the Data Logger and MS Excel to analyze DP and Power Plant data for incident analysis and identification of improvement opportunities. Possess full knowledge of the set-up and use of the data logger to save data, export data, and print out data charts for analysis. Possess detailed understanding of all DP and Vessel/Power Management Systems user settings, how they affect operations, and able to contribute to decisions of how to adjust user settings for changing conditions or operations. Possess full understanding of displayed data on DP and Vessel/Power Management Systems, being able to distinguish between real data vs. calculated data and understand how the origin of these data affects operations. Understand the Electronic Riser and Stack Angle Sensors sufficiently to be able to calibrate sensors, verify functional sensors, and detect defective sensors. Understand details of the DP computer/control system(s), including changing between systems and the various modes of operation. Possess complete familiarity with DP Simulator, if applicable. Possess full knowledge of operational theory, failure modes, testing, and problem mitigation of thruster units and associated systems. Possess full knowledge of operational theory, failure modes, and problem mitigation of power supplies used for DP – AC, UPS, DC. Possess detailed knowledge of Operational capabilities and capability plots, including worse case failure mode. Possess comprehensive knowledge of vessel's operations manuals and communications systems. Take an active role during FMEA and acceptance trials including black out tests, power chop, and phase back tests. Know in detail all emergency procedures and actions due to failures of position reference systems, wind sensors, computers, generator/power, thrusters, sensors, and any other systems/equipment relevant to the DP – QHSE. Personnel: Promote and maintain good working relationships with other departments, third-party personnel and Customer representatives. Ensure all DPOs meet the training requirements as per their applicable training matrix. Mentor, coach, develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent to work at their next job level. Provide leadership and motivation to the marine crews. Apply continuous improvement process. Mentor Dynamic Positioning Operators and deputize when operations, security of well, and personnel safety are not at risk. Assist in training to ensure that all personnel are competent to perform their allocated jobs. Participate fully in the annual performance appraisal process. Apply appropriate accountability regarding recognition; recommend promotion or disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
