SPARE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER
POSITION: Full-time, school year only position; this excludes snow days, scrub weeks, & summer break. 6hrs. per day
IDENTIFICATION: This position is a full-time, school year only position. The hours of this position are based on school bus routes and student needs. The position is primarily a day-time shift position; with possibility of sports trips.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School graduate or GED preferred.
- Hold a valid CDL Class B Maine Driver’s License with passenger and school bus endorsements
- Must have passed a physical exam directed by state requirements and comply with stipulations recommended by the district’s examining physician.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical information.
- Ability to work safely with chemicals and equipment.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other employees. Be a team player.
- Self directed/ motivated.
- Job requires physical ability to lift 40 lbs., stand, climb stairs and ladders, lift, push, pull, and bend for extended periods.

REPORTS TO:
Director of Transportation and Custodial Services or his/her designee.
POSITION GOAL: This position's goal is to transport students safely and efficiently to and from school or events. To provide a safe and clean learning environment enabling the students to take the fullest advantage of the district's total educational program. To respect the district and its personnel and represent it with the utmost professionalism.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain a Class B Maine State Drivers License with passenger and school bus endorsements; maintain satisfactory driving record
- Ability to pass any district, state, or federal mandated physical examinations
- Perform pre-trip inspections of district vehicles in accordance with Transportation Policies
- Be able to check oil, coolant, and fuel at proper operating levels
- Maintain vehicle in proper, safe, and clean condition
- Maintains proper paperwork (student counts, route sheets, bus slips, student conduct reports)
- Ability to make independent decisions when it is necessary, reports decisions to direct supervisor
- Ability to serve as a positive role model of RSU 9
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff; as is expected of all staff.
- Knows and understands use of district email, responds when necessary.
- Ability to adapt to new and unusual situations.
- Ability to interact well with others. Cooperative when working with administrators, supervisor, staff, and community.
- Report defects or mechanical failures of vehicle on proper documentation provided by the district transportation office
- Be able to manage students in a professional manner; reporting incidents when necessary
- Report students needing further disciplinary action to the Director of Transportation and Custodial Services or his/her designee.
- Observe and obey all district, local, and state traffic laws
- Keep to assigned route at all times; discharge of passengers at authorized stops only
- Offer input in regards to bus routes, stops, and notify transportation office of any changes
- Notify transportation office if vehicle is running late; maintains proper radio etiquette
- Perform at least 3 emergency evacuations for each trip of students each year; provide transportation office of proper emergency evacuation documentation
- Attend all transportation safety meetings and conferences as directed by Director of Transportation or their designee
- Report ALL accidents to Director of Transportation immediately
- Wear proper uniform attire and maintains serviceability
- Be able to follow district policies; contractual obligations with professional attitude
- Communicate with students, parents, and guardians in a professional manner
- Follow all necessary requirements of time clock procedures
- Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Must become CPR certified; and maintain certification throughout employment
- Participates in workshops and meetings provided for professional development; including Driving Dynamics
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Director of Transportation and Custodial Services and/or their designee
