Vehicle Mechanic Lead

Purpose Statement

The job of Vehicle Mechanic Lead is done for the purpose/s of ensuring the availability of district vehicles and grounds equipment in safe operating condition including determining needed repairs and/or replacements; giving direction to other mechanic staff on repairs/troubleshooting; performing required repairs and preventative maintenance; providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements; and providing information to the Transportation Supervisor for evaluation purposes on the effective work habits and skills of other mechanics.

 

This job reports to Director of Transportation

 

Essential Functions

  • Adjusts parts and/or components for the purpose of ensuring the fitness and proper operation of all vehicles and grounds equipment.
  • Maintains tools, equipment and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area.
  • Monitors fuel storage for the purpose of ensuring that sufficient amounts are on hand as required.
  • Procures equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently, within established procedures and budget limits, and monitors other mechanics to ensure that they follow district procurement procedures.
  • Repairs systems/components, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition, and directs/supervises other mechanic staff to ensure that all repairs to district vehicles are performed correctly.
  • Replaces all defective parts for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in a safe operating condition, and directs other mechanic staff when needed in this same area.
  • Transports buses and repair equipment to various locations around the district or surrounding area for the purpose of performing field repairs or replacement of vehicles, as needed.

Other Functions

  • Directs other personnel as may be required (e.g. welding duties, etc.) for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating heavy equipment; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles and grounds equipment including mowers, tractors, graders, fork lifts, etc.; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, airbrakes, electrical systems and safety items.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; analyze datautilizing defined but different processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ability to direct and supervise others on routine and complex tasks and repairs, and prioritize and establish flow chart plans for repairs and preventative work scheduling.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

 

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 20% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

 

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.

 

Education: Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area

Certificates and Licenses

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) School Bus Certifications preferred, or the ability to obtain the same.Commercial Driver's License-Class B with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement

 

Continuing Educ. / Training

First Aid/CPR Certification within 4 months

Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance Random drug testing
