JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                MERCEDES ISD 

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist the school principal in the overall administration of the instructional program and operations at the campus level.  Coordinate assigned student activities and services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

    Education/Certification:

Master’s Degree

Texas Mid management or other appropriate Texas certificate

Certified instructional supervisor and appraiser in Professional Development and Appraisal System

Valid Texas teaching certificate

 

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

Thorough understanding of school administrative operations

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

    Experience:

Three years experience as a classroom teacher

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs.
  2. Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers to pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  3. Facilitate the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
  4. Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
  5. Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  6. Employ effective interpersonal skills.
  7. Participate in collaborative process to develop campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
  8. Assist principal in developing, maintaining, and using appropriate information systems and records necessary for attainment of campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
  9. Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conference with staff; serve as an appraiser in the professional Development and Appraisal System.
  10. Assist principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
  11. Supervise operations in the absence of the regular principal.
  12. Assist in the administration of the daily organization of the school including class scheduling, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activities.
  13. Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with the attendance supervisor on investigate follow-up actions.
  14.  Work with department heads and faculty in compiling annual budget requests based upon documented program needs.
  15. Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conduct inventories; maintain records; and verify receipts for such materials.
  16. Cooperative in the conducting of safety inspections and safety drill practices activities.
  17. Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  18. Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Educational rule, and local board policy.
  19. Coordinate and provide adequate supervision of students during noninstructional periods.
  20. Provide input to develop a student management system that results in positive student behavior.
  21. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  22. Conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning school and student issues.
  23. Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  24. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  25. Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  26. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
  27. Use appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
  28. Administer medication to students, check temperatures, and notify parents of student illness in nurse’s absence.
  29. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Principal.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Shares supervisory responsibility for professional staff with school principal.  Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, and clerical personnel and others when assigned by principal.

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); coordinate campus support functions; maintain emotional control.

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Occasional districtwide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
