Job Description
Trees Atlanta is hiring a Nursery Manager to develop, implement, and oversee the day-to-day operations of our tree liner, shrub, and perennial nursery. The ideal candidate will have prior horticultural experience, an independent work ethic, and the ability to manage volunteers.
Responsibilities
- Develop procedures for the day-to-day operations of a small nursery in an urban setting, with the oversight of the Director of Conservation
- Successfully grow healthy, high-quality tree liner stock, native shrubs, and perennials, including all aspects of watering, transplanting, integrated pest management, fertilization, weeding, pruning, staking, and tagging
- Monitor and maintain nursery infrastructure, including irrigation system, hoop houses and a greenhouse, tools and equipment, and vehicles, in conjunction with the Program Logistics Manager
- Maintain wholesale purchase and sales relationships with other nurseries
- Manage retail sales of plants at our twice-annual plant and tree sales, tree giveaways, and other opportunities as requested
- Maintain complete and accurate inventory of plant material
- Supervise community volunteers at the nursery
- Develop and follow the annual nursery budget
Expectations and Qualifications
- Hard-working, disciplined, and independent work ethic
- Reliable attendance with the ability to work Saturdays, and coordinate urgent repairs when needed
- Leadership skills for supervising nursery staff and volunteers
- At least 3 years of prior horticultural experience (nursery or farm experience preferred)
- A degree is not required, but will substitute for one (1) year of professional experience if related to Forestry or Horticulture.
- Physical Requirements
- Be at least 21 years of age (Insurance requirement to drive Trees Atlanta vehicles)
- Have a valid drivers license with at least a 3-year clear history
- Ability to work for up to 8-10 hours outdoors, in varying conditions and temperatures
- Ability to bend and lift (up to 50 pounds)
- Have an updated tetanus shot
