Starting pay range $60,000 a year.
Job Overview: Under the direction of the Supervisor of Education, manages a student caseload; provides academic instruction to students on an individualized or small group basis; communicates with families, teachers, and school personnel to support a successful educational journey; travels to school sites as assigned to meet with instruction and administrative teams and to engage students in their learning environment. Provides academic guidance to students attending the afterschool program at the SMSC Education center as scheduled. Works with the Education Department on curricular and programmatic innovations. Maintains a safe and healthy environment. Responsible for the supervision of students in classroom settings, and on activities as scheduled.
Maximize Your Impact: The Responsibilities You’ll Own:
- Provide individualized academic support to students attending the SMSC Education Center.
- Helps develop supplemental materials and activities for students with various abilities.
- Support student’s individual academic goal planning to ensure graduation.
- Serves as a study skills coach to prepare students for mandatory school district tests, practice tests, skills reviews, while encouraging and motivating students to succeed.
- Leads organized learning activities for students to develop and strengthen their academic, emotional, behavioral, and social skills.
- Beginning at the middle school level, proactively provides post-secondary support that includes preparation and planning to maximize each students’ potential and to identify educational opportunities.
- Proactively monitors student attendance. Intervenes when issues arise to bring students within the guidelines established by the SMSC Education Committee.
- Serves as a direct liaison between schools and families. Consult with students’ teachers on academic, attendance, social/emotional/behavioral or cultural issues.
- Serves as an advocate for students, families and the SMSC staff to achieve positive results for students within the school setting.
- Supports the coordination and execution of special events.
- Assists with all activities in the SMSC Education Department. Attends all Education Department meetings and events as required.
- Maintains all appropriate data for assigned students in the selected database or SIS system (i.e. Infinite Campus)
- Monitors academic progress via selected database; communicates with students’ schoolteachers/counselors.
- Participates and promotes Dakota language and culture through programming, activities, and special events.
- Mandated reporter of suspected child abuse or neglect.
Required Experience:
- Current MN Teaching License required.
- Bachelor’s degree, ideally in Education, Psychology or related field.
- Demonstrated experience as a classroom teacher, instructor, tutor, or teaching assistant.
- Demonstrates a sensitivity to and understanding of the Dakota people, their culture, history and contemporary status.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and ideally experience working with Native American school age children and their families.
- Demonstrates the ability to work closely with our families and the school’s staff to ensure effective communication, collaboration, and cooperation.
- Demonstrates a commitment to promoting academic and cognitive success for each student.
- Demonstrates effective organizational and communication skills.
- Demonstrates computer skills, Microsoft, Word, and Excel.
- Valid Class D driver’s license may be required with a good driving record.
- C.P.R. and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to work 2nd shift when needed.
- Current MN Teaching license in Special Education with ABS, ASD, EBD, DD, or LD a PLUS!
- Capacity to handle and lift up to 25 lbs. as needed.
