Material Planner Lead- Job Overview

Requiring experienced and detail-oriented Material Buyer/Planner with a strong specialty in supplier communication and analytics. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in the procurement, planning, and management of materials and supplies for our operations, ensuring that production schedules are met on time while maintaining cost-effectiveness and quality. This position requires the ability to manage supplier relationships, analyze procurement data, forecast material requirements, and streamline purchasing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Supplier Communication and Relationship Management:

  • Supplier Liaison: Establish and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Issue Resolution: Address and resolve any issues related to material quality, delivery delays, and service concerns, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Supplier Performance Monitoring: Regularly assess supplier performance metrics (e.g., delivery accuracy, lead time, quality standards) and initiate corrective actions as necessary.

Material Planning and Procurement:

  • Material Requirement Planning (MRP): Utilize MRP systems to create material forecasts, ensuring timely and accurate inventory replenishment and aligning with production needs.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels to prevent shortages of excess stock and optimize warehouse space, using analytics to adjust purchasing patterns.
  • Purchase Order Management: Create, track, and manage purchase orders, ensuring materials are delivered on schedule and according to the required specifications.
  • Cost Control: Analyze material costs and identify opportunities to reduce procurement expenses while maintaining quality and supplier relationships.

Analytics and Data Reporting:

  • Data Analysis: Analyze historical purchasing data and market trends to forecast future material requirements accurately, providing actionable insights for decision-making.
  • KPIs & Reporting: Develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to supplier performance, cost optimization, inventory levels, and lead times. Provide regular reports to management.
  • Supply Chain Optimization: Leverage data-driven insights to recommend and implement improvements in supply chain efficiency, delivery schedules, and vendor performance.
  • Market Research: Stay current on market trends and supply chain innovations, identifying potential opportunities for strategic sourcing or process improvements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Coordination with Production and Operations: Work closely with production and operations teams to understand material requirements and adjust procurement strategies to align with production timelines.
  • Collaboration with Finance: Coordinate with the finance department to ensure budget compliance and optimize purchasing to reduce costs.
  • Vendor Audits: Conduct periodic supplier audits and assessments to ensure compliance with contract terms and quality standards.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Process Optimization: Proactively identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities in the material planning and purchasing process.
  • Training and Development: Stay up-to-updated on industry, best practices and new procurement tools or technologies and train relevant teams as necessary.

Skills & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in material planning, procurement, or supply chain management, with a strong focus on supplier communication and analytics.
  • Analytical Skills: Advanced proficiency in data analysis, utilizing tools such as Microsoft Excel, ERP systems, or advanced analytics software.
  • Supplier Management: Proven experience in managing supplier relationships, contract negotiation, and performance evaluation.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey expectations and resolve issues with suppliers.
  • Technology: Familiarity with MRP systems, procurement software, and general supply chain management tools.

Preferred:

  • Certifications: APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) or similar certification is a plus.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in specific industry, e.g., manufacturing, automotive, consumer goods.

  • Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external suppliers.
